Neutron inelastic scattering study of the lattice dynamics of strontium titanate: harmonic models
W. G. Stirling
1972· Journal of Physics C Solid State Physics241doi:10.1088/0022-3719/5/19/005

Extensive neutron inelastic scattering measurements of the frequencies of normal modes in strontium titanate propagating in the crystallographic directions (0, 0, zeta ), ( zeta , zeta , 0), ( zeta , zeta , zeta ), (1/2, 1/2, zeta ) and ( zeta , zeta , 1/2) are reported. The temperature dependence of the 'soft' modes at points Gamma and R have been investigated with particular emphasis on the mode of symmetry Delta 2, propagating in the direction (1/2, 1/2, zeta ); quantitative estimates of the isotropy of the dispersion surface at Gamma and R are given. Rigid ion, rigid shell, and deformable shell models of the crystal dynamics have been developed. Based on these, the frequency distribution, specific heat, one-phonon X ray scattering intensity. Debye-Waller factor, and two-phonon Raman spectrum have been calculated; where possible, these are compared with the available experimental measurements.

Concussion and long-term cognitive impairment among professional or elite sport-persons: a systematic review

2020· Journal of Neurology Neurosurgery & Psychiatry68doi:10.1136/jnnp-2019-321170

INTRODUCTION: Understanding whether concussion in sport is associated with worsening cognitive function in later life will likely have immediate repercussion on sports concussion prevention and management policy and sporting rules and regulations. This systematic review aims to summarise the evidence on the association between concussion sustained by professional/elite athletes and long-term cognitive impairment. METHODS: Embase, PubMed and Web of Science were used to search for eligible studies. Studies including professional/elite athletes from any sport were considered. Three comparison groups were considered: internal comparison (concussed vs non-concussed athletes within the same sample); between-sport comparison (contact sport athletes vs non-contact sports ones); external comparison (athletes vs samples of the general population or population norms). RESULTS: 14 studies were included (rugby, American football, ice hockey players, boxers and marital art fighters). The general quality of the evidence was poor. The overall evidence, weighted for type of comparison and study quality, points towards an association between sustaining a sport-related concussion and poorer cognitive function later in life in rugby, American football and boxing, although it is unclear to what extent this is clinically relevant. Data on ice hockey and martial arts were too sparse to allow conclusions to be drawn. CONCLUSION: High-quality, appropriately designed and powered epidemiological studies are urgently needed to assess the association between sustaining a sport-related concussion and cognitive impairment later in life. Particular emphasis should be put on the clinical translational value of findings.

Charles Georges Thibault (1919–2003): inspirational leader in French reproductive biology
R. H. F. Hunter
2016· Zygote5doi:10.1017/s0967199416000320

The contribution of Charles Thibault in creating and developing a major international centre of animal research at Jouy-en-Josas (near Versailles) in post Second World War France is recorded in detail. Not only did he select a team of gifted young chercheurs, but he stimulated and supported their research in diverse ways. The projects covered were not only primarily of significance to animal reproduction, but they also became relevant to human infertility studies and to IVF treatments. Members of the team in Physiologie Animale gained international research reputations and seasoned overseas researchers were attracted to Jouy-en-Josas for their sabbaticals. Thibault himself was known especially for his studies on the mammalian oocyte, on fertilization both in vivo and in vitro, and for a key publication on parthenogenesis. Over and above leading the department of Physiologie Animale at the Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique (INRA), he was Professor of Reproductive Physiology at the University of Paris VI and an influential member of national committees in Paris. His formal career reached a peak with his appointment as President of the French scientific research organisation (CNRS), and his overall contributions were celebrated both nationally and internationally, not least as Commander of the Legion d'Honneur and recipient of the Wolf Prize, the latter being presented in the Israeli Parliament, the Knessett. His influence continues to be strong, felt in France and beyond through his protégés and his publications.

Comparación de la NaProTecnología con las Técnicas de Reproducción Asistida
Pasquale Gallo, Joseph Tham
2022· Medicina y Ética4doi:10.36105/mye.2022v33n1.05

Adaptation of the Missing Scan Task to a touchscreen format for assessing working memory capacity in children

2021· Infant and Child Development3doi:10.1002/icd.2277

Abstract Assessing children's working memory capacity (WMC) can be challenging for a variety of reasons, including the rapid increase in WMC across early childhood. Here, we developed and piloted an adapted WMC task, which involved minimal equipment, could be performed rapidly, and did not rely on verbal production ability (to facilitate the use of the task with younger children). In our adaptation, we portrayed the events of the object‐based Missing Scan Task (creatures hiding in and emerging from a house) in a touchscreen format. In the full experiment, 67 participants aged 23 to 90 months achieved the longest set size (LSS) scores that were distributed across the full range of possible scores. A comparison of these scores with those obtained using object‐based formats indicated general agreement between the versions of the task. Scores were found to increase with child age. We propose this (freely available) touchscreen adaptation as a suitable WMC task for use with children aged 2 to 7 years.

The Application of Psychodynamic Principles to the Learning Objectives in a General Practice Vocational Training Scheme in the Setting of a Small Group
Deirdre Paulley, I Tait
2010· Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics2doi:10.1159/000287752

This paper is the result of 12 years' work and describes the application of psychodynamic principles to the structuring and conducting of a course for general practitioners in the Ipswich Vocational Training Scheme. The overall aims are to release the potential of each trainee for life-long self-motivated study and for emotional sensitivity through self-awareness. We have attempted to integrate the emotional and factual learning of the trainee by applying the procedures found valuable in psychoanalytic therapy to the learning process, thus enabling him to go through some of the integrative experience present in therapy. This will help him to use the doctor/patient relationship more creatively. A secondary aim is to provide him with the necessary skills to enable him to become a better partner, trainer and educationist. The course to which this was applied started 12 years ago with a unique feature. It was constructed so as to have 8 members who worked together throughout the 3 years of their training; the first 2 years being spent in rotating hospital posts and the last in general practice. Throughout the 3 years the 8 members came together with two staff for weekly sessions in a small group setting. Since the beginning of the scheme we have had six cohorts of 8 members, with 2 'drop-outs' and 'drop-ins', making a total of 50 doctors.

Outstanding questions concerning sperm-epithelial binding in the mammalian oviduct
Ronald H. F. Hunter, J. Gadea
2015· Zygote2doi:10.1017/s0967199415000301

Preovulatory binding of viable spermatozoa in the oviduct isthmus is widely accepted as a preliminary to fertilization, but details of physiological events associated with epithelial binding and release from binding are themselves little understood. Important questions include the potential number, distribution and stability of such sites in the caudal isthmus, whether multiple molecular forms of binding exist within a single-mated individual, and whether some sites are more favourable than others for the maintenance of preovulatory sperm viability. Also to be resolved is whether spermatozoa interact with the first available binding sites in the isthmus, whether spermatozoa from second or subsequent matings bind closer to the site of fertilization, and whether the first spermatozoa entering the oviduct are those that will be released first with impending ovulation. Ideally, future research needs to focus on a fertilizing spermatozoon monitored in vivo and not on spermatozoa destined to remain on or in the zona pellucida or in the lower reaches of the oviduct.

A multiple source electron-beam evaporator
J C Mitchinson, R.D. Pringle
1972· Journal of Physics E Scientific Instruments1doi:10.1088/0022-3735/5/8/004

A multiple-source electron-beam evaporator is described which is suitable for use in ultrahigh vacuum. Up to six separate sources can be accommodated, the source changing being carried out by means of a stainless-steel assembly incorporating a Geneva mechanism. The electron beam is made to operate in the temperature-limited mode giving a fine control over the evaporation rate.

2011· Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers - Engineering History and Heritage1doi:10.1680/ehah.2011.164.3.155

Among the wide range of civil engineering works undertaken by John Rennie were a number of elegant masonry arch bridges, the finest of which being Waterloo Bridge in London, UK. This paper looks briefly at some of the significant masonry bridges in Rennie’s earlier career, to indicate his experience up to 1809 when he became involved with Waterloo Bridge. It then describes in more detail the design and construction of the bridge, and the constraints and problems that Rennie had to deal with in the process.

Dear Dorothy: Letters from Nicolas Slonimsky to Dorothy Adlow. Ed. by Electra Slonimsky Yourke
P. Dickinson
2013· Music and Lettersdoi:10.1093/ml/gct065

Nicolas Slonimsky was born into a distinguished family in St Petersburg in 1894 and arrived in the USA in 1923. His legacy is one of a lexicographer of genius. He raised the acquisition of information to the highest level, all in a pre-digital age, and his publications were landmarks. Music since 1900 (1937, followed by further editions and supplements) has a wide scope and is not limited to major figures; he took over O. Thompson’s The International Cyclopedia of Music and Musicians in 1946 and it was here that he was shocked to discover many articles simply lifted from other dictionaries; from 1958 he made Baker’s Biographical Dictionary of Musicians into a reliable reference work, with most of its entries in his own idiosyncratic style. In 1945 he published a pioneering study, Music of Latin America (New York, 1945, 1949, 1972; Spanish trans., 1947), based on material collected during a wide-ranging tour documented in these letters to his wife.

<b>Aim:</b> To investigate the presence of respiratory dysfunction among a cohort of mostly symptom free visitors and employees in the Berlaymont Building, Brussels for World COPD Day 2015. <b>Methods:</b> Visitors and employees were invited to perform a spirometry test to ATS/ERS standards. During the procedure they were made aware of the health and economic impact of Tobacco on the European community. <b>Results:</b> Of 235 participants 195 (male 43%, female 57%) had acceptable spirometry measurements. Mean age 44 years. 43% were ex- or current smokers, (male 45%, female 55%) with an average of 12 pack years (corresponding at 20 cigarettes a day per year). The results in Table 1 suggest early signs of small airway disease due to tobacco being detected in a group of smokers without symptoms. If they keep on smoking they may develop COPD: thus 95 participants. <b>Conclusion:</b> Among a randomized group of visitors and employees of the Berlaymont building we could identify a significant influence of tobacco smoke. A simple screening spirometry for current smokers as a routine health assessment could help to reduce European health costs. Test results could be a good incentive for individuals to quit smoking. <b>Acknowledgments:</b> VVLR (Flemisch association of lung function technician (Belgium) ART&amp;P (association for respiratory technology and physiology United Kingdom) The European COPD Coalition (ECC) CareFusion (spirometry equipment)
