Tunicate-associated bacteria show a great potential for the discovery of antimicrobial compounds

Tunicates (Ascidians, sea squirts) are marine protochordates, which live sedentary or sessile in colonial or solitary forms. These invertebrates have to protect themselves against predators and invaders. A most successful strategy, to not being eaten by predators and prevent pathogenic microorganisms to settle, is the usage of chemical molecules for defence. To accomplish this, tunicates take advantage of the specialized metabolites produced by the bacteria associated with them. Therefore, the microbiome of the tunicates can be regarded as a promising bioresource for bacterial strains producing compounds with antibacterial activity. The aim of this study was to test this hypothesis by (i) isolation of tunicate-associated bacteria, (ii) analysis of the antibacterial activities of these strains, and (iii) purification and structure elucidation of an active compound derived from this bioresource. In total, 435 bacterial strains were isolated and thereof 71 (16%) showed antibacterial activity against multidrug resistant (MDR) bacteria. Therefrom, the ethyl acetate crude extracts from liquid fermentations of 25 strains showed activity against MDR Extended-Spectrum Beta-Lactamase (MDR-ESBL) Escherichia coli, MDR Bacillus cereus, Micrococcus luteus, and Bacillus megaterium. Phenotypic analysis based on 16S rDNA sequencing revealed the active strains belonging to different genera and phyla, like Bacillus, Pantoea, Pseudoalteromonas, Salinicola, Streptomyces, Vibrio and Virgibacillus. To obtain first insights into the molecules responsible for the antibacterial activities observed, strain Pseudoalteromonas rubra TKJD 22 was selected for large-scale fermentation and the active compound was isolated. This allowed the purification and structure elucidation of isatin, a compound known for its strong biological effects, thereunder inhibition of Gram-positive and Gram-negative pathogens.

RANCANG BANGUN APLIKASI GAME MATEMATIKA UNTUK PENYANDANG TUNAGRAHITA BERBASIS MOBILE

Mentally disabled is the condition of a person experiencing mental retardation. This situation results in a person experiencing barriers in one or more basic psychological processes include the use of oral and written language problems. Based on interviews with SD SLB teachers, mental disabled in numeracy learning more interested in learning media audio visual because students more enthusiastic and enjoyed the learning process. This research designs and develops learning media form of educational games for the introduction of numbers 1-100 and calculations 1-20 for student using Construct 2. The development method used Multimedia Development Life Cycle (MDLC) which includes concept, design, collecting material, assembly, testing distribution. The game has been developed gets a good response, because students enthusiastic and enjoy learning about the introduction and calculation of numbers. Based on the results of validation by experts to see the feasibility of the media obtained an average score of 42.5 which indicates the media appropriateness of being used as a learning media, based on the blackbox test, the application functions are running well. The results of the research in the form of this game can also be operated on android based handphone. Tunagrahita adalah kondisi seseorang mengalami keterbelakangan mental. Keadaan tersebut mengakibatkan seseorang mengalami hambatan pada satu atau lebih proses psikologis dasar yang mencakup penggunaan bahasa lisan maupun tulisan yang menyebabkan permasalahan perkembangan. Berdasarkan wawancara dengan guru SD SLB siswa penyandang tunagrahita pada pembelajaran berhitung lebih tertarik dengan media pembelajaran berupa audio visual karena siswa tunagrahita lebih antusias dan menikmati proses pembelajaran. Penelitian ini merancang dan mengembangkan media pembelajaran berupa game edukasi pengenenalan angka 1-100 dan perhitungan 1-20 untuk anak tunagrahita mengunakan Software Construct 2. Metode pengembangan yang digunakan yaitu Multimedia Development Life Cycle(MDLC) yang meliputi concept, design, material collecting, assembly, testing dan distribution. Game yang telah dikembangkan mendapat respon yang baik dari guru dan orang tua, hal tersebut dikarenakan siswa tunagrahita lebih antusias dan menikmati pembelajaran tentang pengenalan dan perhitungan angka. Berdasarkan hasil validasi oleh ahli materi dan media untuk melihat kelayakan media diperoleh rata-rata skor 42,5 yang menunjukan bahwa media layak digunakan sebagai media pembelajaran serta berdasarkan uji blackbox, fungsi aplikasi sudah berjalan dengan baik. Hasil penelitian berupa game ini juga dapat di operasikan pada handphone berbasis android.

KAJIAN SISTEM PENGELOLAAN LIMBAH BAHAN BERBAHAYA DAN BERACUN (B3) KEGIATAN PENDIDIKAN DI KAMPUS INSTITUT TEKNOLOGI SEPULUH NOPEMBER (ITS)

Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) memiliki memiliki total 54 laboratorium yang tersebar di empat fakultas dan laboratorium Direktorat Riset dan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat (DRPM) ITS. Semua laboratium aktif digunakan untuk kegiatan praktikum maupun menunjang penelitian. Kegiatan tersebut tentunya menghasilkan limbah. Limbah yang dihasilkan dari kegiatan di laboratoium dikategorikan sebagai limbah B3 yang dalam pengelolaannya memiliki ketentuan khusu. Saat ini, masing-masing laboratorium sudah memiliki sistem pewadahan untuk limbah-nya, akan tetapi belum semuanya memenuhi standar dan persyaratan sesuai dengan peraturan perundang-undangan yang berlaku. Beberapa departemen di ITS sudah memiliki IPAL khusus untuk limbah laboratorium akan tetapi belum beroperasi dengan baik.
 Selain limbah dari kegiatan laboratorium, ITS juga menghasilkan limbah B3 jenis sampah spesifik. Limbah tersebut dihasilkan dari kegiatan perkantoran dan kegiatan kemahasiswaan. Timbulan sampah spesifik di ITS diantaranya adalah berasal dari sampah elektronik dan sampah yang mengandung limbah B3 seperti lampu, catridge printer, baterai, dan bekas kemasan yang mengandung limbah B3.
 Penelitian ini adalah penelitian kebijakan yang hasil akhirnya adalah Desain perencanaan TPS limbah B3 disesuaikan dengan kebutuhan dan kapasitas limbah B3 yang dihasilkan pada unit-unit terkait agar dapat menampung limbah B3 dengan jumlah yang sesuai. Perencanaan TPS limbah B3 juga dilengkapi dengan fasilitas-fasilitas tertentu, seperti melakukan standarisasi kemasan/ container yang aman untuk berbagai karakteristik limbah B3, rak penyimpanan kemaan limbah laboratorium, system monitoring, SOP (Standard Operating Procedure), penyediaan label dan simbol seseuai dengan karakteristik limbah, ventilasi yang baik, saluran pengumpul tumpahan, serta sarana pendukung K3 (kotak APD, kotak P3K, emergency eye wash, emergency body wash, APAR).

Frequency Distribution Method to Calculate the Strength of Research Renewable Energy in Indonesia

Abstract This study investigated scientific research on mapping the strength of New and Renewable Energy focus reseach BASED on the 2014-2018 scopus data. The Ministry of Research Technology and (KemenristekDIKTI), especially the Directorate General of Research and Development (RISBANG) has a huge Role on improving the quality of higher education. One way to improve higher education quality is through mapping the stregths of research. The strength of the research that form the basis of this mapping, refers to RPJPN 2005-2025 and RPJMN 2015-2019 which focuses on New and Renewable Energy. This study, used three steps methodology; (1). Collecting Data, were collected from secondary Scopus data year 2014-2018 from KemenristekDIKTI in scientific publication focus on New and Renewable Energy, (2) identifying Scopus data based on sub-focus of New and Renewable Energy, (3). Data analysis using frequency distribution, (Determine the range of data, determine the classes, and determine the class interval). This study concluded that 94 % (250) of 266 universities published journal indexed Scopus on range 1-44 journal publications within 5 years. ITB (Bandung Institute of Technology) has the most journal publications of New and Renewable Energy.

Mapping the Strength of Research in the Focus Areas for Information and Communication Technology based on SCOPUS 2014 – 2018

Abstract Higher education is one of the most critical stages of education in a country. Most experts in various fields become proficient through higher education. Therefore, providers of tertiary education or tertiary institutions must continuously improve the quality of their education. One way to improve its quality is by mapping university excellence. This mapping was held to see the advantages of each provider in Indonesia. As an education center, as well as a research center, one that can be used as a basis for mapping is scientific publications. In this study, the superiority to be seen refers to RPJPN 2005-2025 and RPJMN 2015-2019 and mapping based on journals in SCOPUS 2014-2018, which focuses on Information and communication technology. This mapping was carried out by the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education, Republic of Indonesia (KEMENRISTEKDIKTI) with an assignment research scheme for strategic policy studies with a focus on information and communication technology. The results of the research discussion conclude that ITB (Bandung Institute of Technology) which has the most of total journal publications for the field of Information and communication technology focuses on 1313 journal publications.

Higher Education with the Most Publication in Focus Area of Basic Science using Frequency Distribution

Abstract This study investigated scientific research on determine the strength of Basic Science focus research BASED on the 2014-2018 Scopus data. The Ministry of Research Technology and ( Kemenristekdikti ), especially the Directorate General of Research and Development (RISBANG), has a significant role in improving the quality of higher education. One way to improve higher education quality is through mapping the strengths of research. The advantage of the study that forms the basis of this mapping refers to RPJPN 2005-2025 and RPJMN 2015-2019, which focuses on Basic Science. This study used three steps methodology. First, secondary Scopus data year 2014-2018 from Kemenristekdikti in scientific publication focus on Basic Science were collected. Second, Scopus data based on sub-focus of Basic Science were identified. Last, we analyzed the data using frequency distribution, which consist of determining the range of data, the class number, and the class interval). This study concluded that 96.4 % (611) of 634 universities published journals indexed Scopus on range 1-136 journal publications within five years. UI (University of Indonesia) has the most journal publications of Basic Science focus.
