[Pneumococcal disease and its prevention. The heptavalent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine].
de Arístegui Fernández J, Corretger Jm, García Martín F, Teresa Hernández‐Sampelayo +3 more
2002· PubMed9

Pneumococcal disease is a major cause of morbidity, hospitalization and mortality. Two age groups show a greater incidence and severity of the disease: children under the age of 5 years (mainly during the first 2 years of life) and adults aged more than 65 years. The heptavalent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine, which was commercialized in Spain in June 2001, is efficacious in children aged less than 2 years and, unlike the non-conjugate 23-valent vaccine, it induces immunological memory. In Spain the heptavalent vaccine covers 80 % of serotypes causing pneumococcal invasive disease and acute otitis media in children aged 2-59 months. The heptavalent vaccine has been shown to be immunogenic, efficacious and safe. It has proven efficacy in the prevention of invasive disease caused by the seven vaccine serotypes. In addition, it significantly decreases pneumonia and also prevent acute otitis media. The vaccine is preferably indicated in children aged less than 2 years; children aged 2-5 years may also benefit from the vaccine but those in risk groups should be prioritized. Greater knowledge of the epidemiology of pneumococcal disease and the efficiency of this vaccine in Spain will determine whether it should be included in the immunization schedule.

Synthesis and study of properties of new oligoesters based on soybean oil as potential poly(vinyl chloride) plasticizers

2023· Journal of Applied Polymer Science8doi:10.1002/app.54865

Abstract New compounds as potential poly(vinyl chloride) plasticizers based on soybean oil and oligoesters of adipic acid and different glycols by one‐pot transesterification are synthesized. In the first step of the plasticizer synthesis oligoesters of adipic acid and diethylene glycol, triethylene glycol, or dipropylene glycol are synthesized, and then in situ in the second step, a defined amount of soybean oil is introduced. By degradation of soybean oil with oligoesters, and transesterification reaction, different compounds are obtained. Their physicochemical properties are determined by NMR, SEC, DSC, TGA, and volatility analyses. The properties of synthesized plasticizers are compared with commercial products: monomeric (DEHP) and aliphatic oligoster of adipic acid and 1,3‐butanediol (H‐1).

Rubén García Maezo, Alejandro Echeverría Rey
20234doi:10.23919/jnic58574.2023.10205787

This study presents a novel framework leveraging the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in enhancing the efficacy of Computer Security Incident Response Teams (CSIRTs). It advocates the synergy of AI and open-source resources, tailored to provide robust, case-specific, and flexible solutions. The framework emphasizes the role of AI-based prediction models and anomaly detection techniques in accelerating incident response, increasing threat detection accuracy, and reducing false positives. Additionally, it elucidates the challenges of AI integration into existing CSIRT operations and offers guidance for seamless assimilation. In conclusion, this study posits the availability of cost-effective, auditable, scalable, and custom-fit open-source solutions for AI implementation, with trans-formative potential for CSIRT practice and incident response optimization.

Iododerma after Lugol use for pre-operative preparation of thyroidectomy
David Almeida, Fernanda Del Rio, Maria Buffara, Maria Virgínia Martins Faria Faddul Alves +3 more
2022· Portuguese Journal of Dermatology and Venereology1doi:10.24875/pjd.m22000011

A 35-year-old man with hyperthyroidism reported the sudden occurrence of ulcerated and painful oral lesions, painful ulcerative-necrotic lesions on the face, trunk, upper and lower limbs and purpuric circinate lesions on the scalp, 6 days after starting the treatment with oral iodine. The clinical history, cutaneous-mucosal lesions, and histopathological findings support the diagnosis of iododerma secondary to oral iodine treatment. Iododerma is a rare disease caused by iodine exposure that can develop after oral or intravenous use, rarely after topical use of iodine and is often associated with systemic manifestations related to vasculitis, which can be fatal, as in the present case.

Remote power over fiber electro-mechanical modulation for enabling hybrid sensor networks
Armando Rodriguez Rodriguez, Manuel López-Amo, Mikel Bravo Acha
20251doi:10.1117/12.3059214

This work presents a power-efficient solution based on Power over Fiber technology that combines and enables the use of electronic devices in fiber optic networks. The optical carrier is modulated via a microelectromechanical variable optical attenuator, using the processed sensor data, which is encoded in a frequency shift keying technique. To illustrate the concept, a 50-km remote environmental station is powered by energy harvesting techniques to provide the requisite power, and a low-power microcontroller encodes the data from electronic sensors. The data was successfully retrieved, achieving data rates of up to 1.5 kbps.

Prospects for the agroecological use of digestate after anaerobic digestion of coffee production waste
Zenoviy Bermes, Sergiy Filippov, Мyroslav Malovanyy, Ivan Tymchuk +4 more
2026· Environmental Problemsdoi:10.23939/ep2026.01.083

This study investigated the anaerobic biodegradation of coffee production waste as a method for producing a high-quality biofertilizer. The resulting digestate was characterized in terms of trace element concentrations, amino acid profile, phytohormone and fulvic acid content, microbiological composition, and heavy metal levels. Bioindication experiments were conducted using ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.), a category I monocotyledonous indicator plant. Dark gray podzolized soil, digestate, and a natural sorbent (natural zeolite from the Sokyrnytskyi deposit) were used as experimental substrates. Comprehensive quality assessment demonstrated that the digestate meets the criteria for a high-quality organic fertilizer, exhibiting a rich chemical composition and environmentally safe properties. The highest mean values of plant growth and development parameters were recorded in treatments containing zeolite, indicating a synergistic effect of digestate and zeolite application on plant performance.
