iabetes self-management education (DSME) is a critical element of care for all people with diabetes and is necessary in order to improve patient outcomes. The National Standards for DSME are designed to define quality diabetes self-management education and to assist diabetes educators in a variety of settings to provide evidence-based education. Because of the dynamic nature of health care and diabetes-related research, these Standards are reviewed and revised approximately every 5 years by key organizations and federal agencies within the diabetes education community.
OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence and the socioeconomic and demographic correlates of tobacco consumption in India. DESIGN: Cross sectional, nationally representative population based household survey. SUBJECTS: 315 598 individuals 15 years or older from 91 196 households were sampled in National Family Health Survey-2 (1998-99). Data on tobacco consumption were elicited from household informants. Measures and methods: Prevalence of current smoking and current chewing of tobacco were used as outcome measures. Simple and two way cross tabulations and multivariate logistic regression analysis were the main analytical methods. RESULTS: Thirty per cent of the population 15 years or older-47% men and 14% of women-either smoked or chewed tobacco, which translates to almost 195 million people-154 million men and 41 million women in India. However, the prevalence may be underestimated by almost 11% and 1.5% for chewing tobacco among men and women, respectively, and by 5% and 0.5% for smoking among men and women, respectively, because of use of household informants. Tobacco consumption was significantly higher in poor, less educated, scheduled castes and scheduled tribe populations. The prevalence of tobacco consumption increased up to the age of 50 years and then levelled or declined. The prevalence of smoking and chewing also varied widely between different states and had a strong association with individual's sociocultural characteristics. CONCLUSION: The findings of the study highlight that an agenda to improve health outcomes among the poor in India must include effective interventions to control tobacco use. Failure to do so would most likely result in doubling the burden of diseases-both communicable and non-communicable-among India's teeming poor. There is a need for periodical surveys using more consistent definitions of tobacco use and eliciting information on different types of tobacco consumed. The study also suggests a need to adjust the prevalence estimates based on household informants.
Participatory research attempts to negotiate a balance between developing valid generalisable knowledge and benefiting the community that is being researched and to improve research protocols by incorporating the knowledge and expertise of community members. We assessed the texts on the basis of our own experiences as members of Native communities (LEC, MLMcC, CMR) and researchers (WLF, NG, ACM, MLMcC, PLT) in participatory research projects. The preliminary draft was reviewed by a wide range of researchers and community members. Tickborne rickettsial diseases continue to cause severe illness and death in otherwise healthy adults and children, despite the availability of low-cost, effective antibacterial therapy. Recognition early in the clinical course is critical because this is the period when antibacterial therapy is most effective. Early signs and symptoms of these illnesses are nonspecific or mimic other illnesses, which can make diagnosis challenging. Previously undescribed tickborne rickettsial diseases continue to be recognized, and since 2004, three additional agents have been described as causes of human disease in the United States: Rickettsia parkeri, Ehrlichia muris-like agent, and Rickettsia species 364D. This report updates the 2006 CDC recommendations on the diagnosis and management of tickborne rickettsial diseases in the United States and includes information on the practical aspects of epidemiology, clinical assessment, treatment, laboratory diagnosis, and prevention of tickborne rickettsial diseases. The CDC Rickettsial Zoonoses Branch, in consultation with external clinical and academic specialists and public health professionals, developed this report to assist health care providers and public health professionals to 1) recognize key epidemiologic features and clinical manifestations of tickborne rickettsial diseases, 2) recognize that doxycycline is the treatment of choice for suspected tickborne rickettsial diseases in adults and children, 3) understand that early empiric antibacterial therapy can prevent severe disease and death, 4) request the appropriate confirmatory diagnostic tests and understand their usefulness and limitations, and 5) report probable and confirmed cases of tickborne rickettsial diseases to public health authorities.
Available data indicate that cardiovascular disease has become the leading cause of death in American Indians. However, limited information is available on cardiovascular disease incidence, prevalence, and risk factors in this population. Reported cardiovascular disease rates vary greatly among groups in different geographic areas. These rates have been obtained from studies of varying sizes and different methodologies. The Strong Heart Study, which uses standardized methodology, is designed to estimate cardiovascular disease mortality and morbidity rates and the prevalence of known and suspected cardiovascular disease risk factors in American Indians. The study population consists of 12 tribes in three geographic areas: an area near Phoenix, Arizona, the southwestern area of Oklahoma, and the Aberdeen area of North and South Dakota. The study includes three components. The first is a mortality survey to estimate cardiovascular disease mortality rates for 1984-1988 among tribal members aged 35-74 years, and the second is a morbidity survey to estimate incidence of both first and first or recurrent hospitalized myocardial infarction and stroke (cerebrovascular disease) among tribal members aged 45-74 years in 1984-1988, and the third is a clinical examination of 4,500 tribal members aged 45-74 years in order to estimate the prevalence of cardiovascular disease and its associations with risk factors. Family history, diet, alcohol and tobacco consumption, physical activity, degree of acculturation, and socioeconomic status are assessed in personal interviews. The physical examination includes measurements of body fat, body circumferences, and blood pressure, an examination of the heart and lungs, an evaluation of peripheral vascular disease, and a 12-lead electrocardiogram. Laboratory measurements include fasting and postload glucose, insulin, fasting lipids, apoproteins, fibrinogen, and glycated hemoglobin. Also measured are serum and urine creatinine and urinary albumin. DNA from lymphocytes is isolated and stored for future genetic studies.
BACKGROUND: The American Cancer Society, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Cancer Institute, and the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries collaborate annually to provide updated information on cancer occurrence and trends in the U.S. The 2007 report features a comprehensive compilation of cancer information for American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN). METHODS: Cancer incidence data were available for up to 82% of the U.S. population. Cancer deaths were available for the entire U.S. population. Long-term (1975 through 2004) and fixed-interval (1995 through 2004) incidence and mortality trends were evaluated by annual percent change using regression analyses (2-sided P < .05). Cancer screening, risk factors, socioeconomic characteristics, incidence data, and stage were compiled for non-Hispanic whites (NHW) and AI/AN across 6 regions of the U.S. RESULTS: Overall cancer death rates decreased by 2.1% per year from 2002 through 2004, nearly twice the annual decrease of 1.1% per year from 1993 through 2002. Among men and women, death rates declined for most cancers. Among women, lung cancer incidence rates no longer were increasing and death rates, although they still were increasing slightly, were increasing at a much slower rate than in the past. Breast cancer incidence rates in women decreased 3.5% per year from 2001 to 2004, the first decrease observed in 20 years. Colorectal cancer incidence and death rates and prostate cancer death rates declined, with colorectal cancer death rates dropping more sharply from 2002 through 2004. Overall, rates for AI/AN were lower than for NHW from 1999 through 2004 for most cancers, but they were higher for cancers of the stomach, liver, cervix, kidney, and gallbladder. Regional analyses, however, revealed high rates for AI/AN in the Northern and Southern Plains and Alaska. For cancers of the breast, colon and rectum, prostate, and cervix, AI/AN were less likely than NHW to be diagnosed at localized stages. CONCLUSIONS: For all races/ethnicities combined in the U.S., favorable trends in incidence and mortality were noted for lung and colorectal cancer in men and women and for breast cancer in women. For the AI/AN population, lower overall cancer incidence and death rates obscured important variations by geographic regions and less favorable healthcare access and socioeconomic status. Enhanced tobacco control and cancer screening, especially in the Northern and Southern Plains and Alaska, emerged as clear priorities.
Periodontal disease is a common infection-induced inflammatory disease among individuals suffering from diabetes mellitus. The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of treatment of periodontal disease on the level of metabolic control of diabetes. A total of 113 Native Americans (81 females and 32 males) suffering from periodontal disease and non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) were randomized into 5 treatment groups. Periodontal treatment included ultrasonic scaling and curettage combined with one of the following antimicrobial regimens: 1) topical water and systemic doxycycline, 100 mg for 2 weeks; 2) topical 0.12% chlorhexidine (CHX) and systemic doxycycline, 100 mg for 2 weeks; 3) topical povidone-iodine and systemic doxycycline, 100 mg for 2 weeks; 4) topical 0.12% CHX and placebo; and 5) topical water and placebo (control group). Assessments were performed prior to and at 3 and 6 months after treatment and included probing depth (PD), clinical attachment level (CAL), detection of Porphyromonas gingivalis in subgingival plaque and determination of serum glucose and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c). After treatment all study groups showed clinical and microbial improvement. The doxycycline-treated groups showed the greatest reduction in probing depth and subgingival Porphyromonas gingivalis compared to the control group. In addition, all 3 groups receiving systemic doxycycline showed, at 3 months, significant reductions (P < or = 0.04) in mean HbA1c reaching nearly 10% from the pretreatment value. Effective treatment of periodontal infection and reduction of periodontal inflammation is associated with a reduction in level of glycated hemoglobin. Control of periodontal infections should thus be an important part of the overall management of diabetes mellitus patients.
Type 2 diabetes is a significant and increasing burden in adolescents and young adults. Clear strategies for research, prevention, and treatment of the disease in these vulnerable patients are needed. Evidence suggests that type 2 diabetes in children is different not only from type 1 but also from type 2 diabetes in adults. Understanding the unique pathophysiology of type 2 diabetes in youth, as well as the risk of complications and the psychosocial impact, will enable industry, academia, funding agencies, advocacy groups, and regulators to collectively evaluate both current and future research, treatment, and prevention approaches. This Consensus Report characterizes type 2 diabetes in children, evaluates the fundamental differences between childhood and adult disease, describes the current therapeutic options, and discusses challenges to and approaches for developing new treatments.
Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has emerged among patients in the general population who do not have established risk factors for MRSA. Records from 10 Minnesota health facilities were reviewed to identify cases of MRSA infection that occurred during 1996-1998 and to identify which cases were community acquired. Susceptibility testing and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) subtyping were performed on available isolates. A total of 354 patients (median age, 16 years) with community-acquired MRSA (CAMRSA) infection were identified. Most case patients (299 [84%]) had skin infections, and 103 (29%) were hospitalized. More than 90% of isolates were susceptible to all antimicrobial agents tested, with the exception of beta-lactams and erythromycin. Of 334 patients treated with antimicrobial agents, 282 (84%) initially were treated with agents to which their isolates were nonsusceptible. Of 174 Minnesota isolates tested, 150 (86%) belonged to 1 PFGE clonal group. CAMRSA infections were identified throughout Minnesota; although most isolates were genetically related and susceptible to multiple antimicrobials, they were generally nonsusceptible to initial empirical therapy.
CONTEXT: Until recently, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections have been acquired primarily in nosocomial settings. Four recent deaths due to MRSA infection in previously healthy children in the Midwest suggest that serious MRSA infections can be acquired in the community in rural as well as urban locations. OBJECTIVES: To document the occurrence of community-acquired MRSA infections and evaluate risk factors for community-acquired MRSA infection compared with methicillin-susceptible S aureus (MSSA) infection. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study with medical record review. SETTING: Indian Health Service facility in a rural midwestern American Indian community. PATIENTS: Patients whose medical records indicated laboratory-confirmed S aureus infection diagnosed during 1997. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Proportion of MRSA infections classified as community acquired based on standardized criteria; risk factors for community-acquired MRSA infection compared with those for community-acquired MSSA infection; and relatedness of MRSA strains, determined by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). RESULTS: Of 112 S aureus isolates, 62 (55%) were MRSA and 50 (45%) were MSSA. Forty-six (74%) of the 62 MRSA infections were classified as community acquired. Risk factors for community-acquired MRSA infections were not significantly different from those for community-acquired MSSA. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis subtyping indicated that 34 (89%) of 38 community-acquired MRSA isolates were clonally related and distinct from nosocomial MRSA isolates found in the region. CONCLUSIONS: Community-acquired MRSA may have replaced community-acquired MSSA as the dominant strain in this community. Antimicrobial susceptibility patterns and PFGE subtyping support the finding that MRSA is circulating beyond nosocomial settings in this and possibly other rural US communities.

The benefits of screening hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg)-positive carriers for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in terms of long-term survival have not been established. We conducted a prospective 16-year, population-based cohort study to determine the impact of screening for HCC in 1,487 HBsAg-positive Alaska native carriers with alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) determinations every 6 months. Men and nonpregnant women with an elevated AFP level were evaluated for the presence of HCC by ultrasound (US) examination. The long-term survival rate for patients whose HCC was detected by the screening program was compared with a historical control group of Alaska native patients with HCC from the same population who were clinically diagnosed with HCC between 1969 and October 1982, through a National Cancer Institute-sponsored Cancer Registry. Between October 1982 and December 1998, 26,752 AFP determinations in HBsAg carriers were performed. One or more AFP elevations were found in 61 men and 39 nonpregnant women. HCC was diagnosed in 32 patients (24 men and 8 women). HCC tumors less than 6 cm were found in 23 patients; 22 patients had resections, and 1 patient refused a resection. Compared with 12 patients with hepatitis B virus (HBV)-related HCC diagnosed from 1969 to October 1982, before this program, the 5- and 10-year survival rate for the 32 patients with HCC were 42% (P =.008) and 30% (P =.07), respectively. Five- and 10-year tumor-free survival rates for carriers who had a normal AFP level on initial screening and subsequently developed HCC were 29% (P =.004) and 24% (P =.024), respectively. Screening of HBsAg carriers with semiannual AFP was effective in detecting most HCC tumors at a resectable stage and significantly prolonged survival rates when compared with historical controls in this population.
Tagatose, a low-calorie, full-bulk natural sugar, has just attained GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) status under U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations, thereby permitting its use as a sweetener in foods and beverages. This paper presents all current aspects of tagatose with respect to demonstrated food and beverage applications and the potential health and medical benefits of this unique substance. Summarized studies are referenced to detailed peer-reviewed papers. The safety studies followed the recommendations in the FDA "Red Book." Results were submitted to an Expert Panel for determination of GRAS status under FDA regulation. Small phase 2 clinical trials showed tagatose to be effective in treating type 2 diabetes. The results, buttressed by the references cited, support the efficacy of the various applications disclosed for tagatose. Tagatose has been found to be safe and efficacious for use as a low-calorie, full-bulk sweetener in a wide variety of foods, beverages, health foods, and dietary supplements. It fills broad, heretofore unmet needs for a low-calorie sweetener in products in which the bulk of sugar is important, such as chocolates, chewing gum, cakes, ice cream, and frosted cereals. Its synergism with high-intensity sweeteners also makes it useful in sodas. Various health and medical benefits are indicated, including the treatment of type 2 diabetes, hyperglycemia, anemia, and hemophilia and the improvement of fetal development.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate prospectively a risk categorization scheme for lower-extremity problems that incorporates the Semmes-Weinstein 5.07 monofilament and a simple exam to stratify patients who were followed in a primary-care setting into risk groups for plantar ulceration and lower-extremity amputation. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Patients with diabetes in a well-defined American-Indian population were stratified into four risk categories based on sensation status to the 5.07 monofilament, the presence of foot deformity, and a history of lower-extremity events (amputation or ulceration): category 0, sensate; category 1, insensate; category 2, insensate with deformity; and category 3, history of lower extremity events. Patients were followed prospectively for lower extremity events and changes in sensation status. RESULTS: We gave screening exams to 358 (88%) of 406 individuals with diabetes in the community. The distribution of patients for risk categories 0, 1, 2, and 3 was 74.3, 8.4, 4.5, and 13%, respectively. Over a 32-mo follow-up period, 41 patients developed ulcerations, and incidence rates correlated positively with increasing risk category (P less than 0.00001). All 14 amputations occurred in risk groups 2 and 3. CONCLUSIONS: These data suggest that the risk categorization described here may have a role in identifying patients at risk for lower extremity events who are followed in a primary-care setting.
Diabetics and smokers are two patient groups at high risk for periodontal disease who also exhibit impaired wound healing and, therefore, constitute two different groups in whom the relationship between host-parasite interaction, outcome of periodontal therapy, and systemic factors is best represented. The results of two independent clinical trials involving treatment of periodontal disease in diabetics and smokers are presented. A new treatment regimen for the management of periodontal disease associated with diabetes mellitus is proposed. This treatment approach incorporates both antimicrobial agents and pharmacological modulation of the host response. Elimination of periodontal infection and reduction of periodontal inflammation in diabetic patients resulted in a significant short-term reduction in the concentration of glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c). Control of chronic infections and modulation of the host response offer a new therapeutic approach in the management of patients with both diabetes and periodontal disease. The effect of smoking on periodontal healing is also discussed. The clinical and microbiological response of smokers to non-surgical periodontal therapy is compared to non-smokers. In addition, possible mechanisms whereby diabetes mellitus and cigarette smoking increase the severity of periodontal disease are discussed.
BACKGROUND AND METHODS: Several conjugate vaccines against Haemophilus influenzae type b have been developed in the search for one that induces protection even in young infants. We evaluated the safety and efficacy of a conjugate vaccine that links the H. influenzae type b capsular polysaccharide to the outer-membrane protein complex (OMPC) of Neisseria meningitidis serogroup B. We conducted a double-blind, placebo, controlled trial in Navajo infants, who are at high risk for systemic infections caused by H. influenzae type b. The infants were randomly assigned to receive the first dose of vaccine or placebo at 42 to 90 days of age and the second at 70 to 146 days of age. RESULTS: Of the infants in the trial, 2588 were assigned to receive the vaccine and 2602 to receive placebo. The mean follow-up was 269 days in the vaccine group and 267 days in the placebo group. Before the age of 18 months, there was 1 systemic H. influenzae type b infection in the vaccine group, as compared with 22 in the placebo group (P less than 0.001; point estimate of efficacy, 95 percent; 95 percent confidence interval, 72 to 99 percent). Of the 22 H. influenzae type b infections in the placebo group, 13 were meningitis. Among the children who received both doses, there was 1 H. influenzae type b infection in the vaccine group (n = 2056) and 14 in the placebo group (n = 2105) (P less than 0.001; point estimate of efficacy, 93 percent; 95 percent confidence interval, 53 to 98 percent). The single infection in the vaccine group occurred at 15 1/2 months of age in an infant with osteomyelitis. Between the first and second doses there were no H. influenzae type b infections in the vaccine group and eight in the placebo group (P less than 0.005; point estimate of efficacy, 100 percent; 95 percent confidence interval, 41 to 100 percent). CONCLUSIONS: The H. influenzae type b OMPC vaccine, administered at 2 and 4 months of age, is safe and induces a high rate of protection against invasive disease caused by H. influenzae type b in infants under the age of 18 months. Protection begins after the first dose.
OBJECTIVE: Many studies have shown that diabetes increases the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in women to a greater extent than in men. One explanation could be that diabetes has more adverse effects on CVD risk factors in women than in men. We compared diabetes-associated differences in CVD risk factors in men and women in the Strong Heart Study, a population-based study of CVD and its risk factors in American Indians. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: A total of 1,846 men and 2,703 women between the ages of 45 and 74 years from 13 American Indian communities in three geographic areas underwent an examination that included a medical history; an electrocardiogram; anthropometric and blood pressure measurements; an oral glucose tolerance test; and measurements of fasting plasma lipoproteins, fibrinogen, insulin, HbA1c, and urinary albumin. RESULTS: Statistically significantly greater adverse differences in those with diabetes versus those without diabetes were observed in women than in men for waist-to-hip ratio, HDL cholesterol, apolipoprotein (apo)B, apoA1, fibrinogen, and LDL size. In multiple linear regression models adjusting for age, center, sex, and diabetes, the diabetes by sex interaction terms were statistically significant for waist-to-hip ratio, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, apoB, apoA1, fibrinogen, and LDL size. CONCLUSIONS: Compared with diabetes-associated differences in men, diabetes in women was related to greater adverse differences in levels of several CVD risk factors. Although the magnitude of the individual diabetes-related differences between men and women was not large, the combined effects of these risk factor differences in diabetic women may be substantial. The apparent greater negative impact of diabetes on CVD risk factors in women may explain, in part, the greater risk for CVD in diabetic women.
To investigate climatic, spatial, temporal, and environmental patterns associated with hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) cases in the Four Corners region, we collected exposure site data for HPS cases that occurred in 1993 to 1995. Cases clustered seasonally and temporally by biome type and geographic location, and exposure sites were most often found in pinyon-juniper woodlands, grasslands, and Great Basin desert scrub lands, at elevations of 1,800 m to 2,500 m. Environmental factors (e.g., the dramatic increase in precipitation associated with the 1992 to 1993 El Niño) may indirectly increase the risk for Sin Nombre virus exposure and therefore may be of value in designing disease prevention campaigns.
BACKGROUND: It is unclear whether increased left ventricular (LV) mass in overweight individuals is related to their adiposity or to greater fat-free mass (FFM). METHODS AND RESULTS: We compared echocardiographic LV mass to FFM and adipose body mass by bioelectric impedance and to anthropometric measurements in 3107 American Indian participants in the Strong Heart Study. In men and women, the relations of LV mass and FFM (r=0.37 and 0.38, P<0.001) were closer (P<0.05 to <0.001) than they were with adipose mass, waist/hip ratio, body mass index, systolic blood pressure, height, or height2.7. Regression analyses showed that in men LV mass had the strongest independent relation with FFM, followed by systolic blood pressure and age (all P<0.001); in women, LV mass was related to FFM more strongly than it was to systolic blood pressure, age (all P<0. 001), and diabetes (P=0.012). Adipose mass had no independent relation to LV mass. When waist/hip ratio or body mass index were substituted for adipose mass, LV mass was independently related to FFM (P<0.001) and body mass index (P=0.02) but not to waist/hip ratio in men and was independently related to FFM and waist/hip ratio (both P<0.001) but not to body mass index in women. Using 97.5 percentile gender-specific partitions for LV mass/FFM in reference individuals, we found that LV hypertrophy occurred in 20.8% of Strong Heart Study participants with hypertension, overweight, or diabetes compared with 10.5% and 16.7% by LV mass indexed for body surface area or height2.7. CONCLUSIONS: LV mass is more strongly related to FFM than to adipose mass, waist/hip ratio, body mass index, or height-based surrogates for lean body weight; LV mass/FFM criteria may increase sensitivity to detect LV hypertrophy.
CONTEXT: The newly licensed tetravalent rhesus-human reassortant rotavirus vaccine has been withdrawn following reports of intussusception among vaccinated infants. OBJECTIVE: To describe the epidemiology of intussusception-associated hospitalizations and deaths among US infants. DESIGN: This retrospective cohort study examined hospital discharge data from the National Hospital Discharge Survey for 1988-1997, Indian Health Service (IHS) for 1980-1997, California for 1990-1997, Indiana for 1994-1998, Georgia for 1997-1998, and MarketScan for 1993-1996, and mortality data from the national multiple cause-of-death data for 1979-1997 and linked birth/infant death data for 1995-1997. PATIENTS: Infants (<1 year old) with an International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification code for intussusception (560.0) listed on their hospital discharge or mortality record, respectively. RESULTS: During 1994-1996, annual rates for intussusception-associated infant hospitalization varied among the data sets, being lowest for the IHS (18 per 100 000; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 9-35 per 100 000) and greatest for the National Hospital Discharge Survey (56 per 100 000; 95% CI = 33-79 per 100 000) data sets. Rates among IHS infants declined from 87 per 100 000 during 1980-1982 to 12 per 100 000 during 1995-1997 (relative risk =7.6, 95% CI = 3.2-18.2). Intussusception-associated hospitalizations were uncommon in the first 2 months of life, peaked from 5 to 7 months old, and showed no consistent seasonality. Intussusception-associated infant mortality rates declined from 6.4 per 1 000 000 live births during 1979-1981 to 2.3 per 1 000 000 live births during 1995-1997 (relative risk = 2.8, 95% CI = 1.8-4.3). Infants whose mothers were <20 years old, nonwhite, unmarried, and had an education level below grade 12 years were at an increased risk for intussusception-associated death. CONCLUSIONS: Intussusception-associated hospitalization rates varied among the data sets and decreased substantially over time in the IHS data. Although intussusception-associated infant deaths in the United States have declined substantially over the past 2 decades, some deaths seem to be related to reduced access to, or delays in seeking, health care and are potentially preventable.intussusception, hospitalizations, deaths, risk factors, infants.
