A measurement of the Higgs boson mass is presented based on the combined data samples of the ATLAS and CMS experiments at the CERN LHC in the H→γγ and H→ZZ→4ℓ decay channels. The results are obtained from a simultaneous fit to the reconstructed invariant mass peaks in the two channels and for the two experiments. The measured masses from the individual channels and the two experiments are found to be consistent among themselves. The combined measured mass of the Higgs boson is m_{H}=125.09±0.21 (stat)±0.11 (syst) GeV.

Measurements of the Higgs boson production and decay rates and constraints on its couplings from a combined ATLAS and CMS analysis of the LHC pp collision data at s = 7 $$ \sqrt{s}=7 $$ and 8 TeV

Combined ATLAS and CMS measurements of the Higgs boson production and decay rates, as well as constraints on its couplings to vector bosons and fermions, are presented. The combination is based on the analysis of five production processes, namely gluon fusion, vector boson fusion, and associated production with a W or a Z boson or a pair of top quarks, and of the six decay modes H → ZZ, W W , γγ, ττ, bb, and μμ. All results are reported assuming a value of 125.09 GeV for the Higgs boson mass, the result of the combined measurement by the ATLAS and CMS experiments. The analysis uses the CERN LHC proton-proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS and CMS experiments in 2011 and 2012, corresponding to integrated luminosities per experiment of approximately 5 fb$^{−1}$ at $\sqrt{s}$=7 TeV and 20 fb−1 at $\sqrt{s}$=8 TeV. The Higgs boson production and decay rates measured by the two experiments are combined within the context of three generic parameterisations: two based on cross sections and branching fractions, and one on ratios of coupling modifiers. Several interpretations of the measurements with more model-dependent parameterisations are also given. The combined signal yield relative to the Standard Model prediction is measured to be 1.09 ± 0.11. The combined measurements lead to observed significances for the vector boson fusion production process and for the H → ττ decay of 5.4 and 5.5 standard deviations, respectively. The data are consistent with the Standard Model predictions for all parameterisations considered.

FCC-ee: The Lepton Collider

In response to the 2013 Update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics, the Future Circular Collider (FCC) study was launched, as an international collaboration hosted by CERN. This study covers a highest-luminosity high-energy lepton collider (FCC-ee) and an energy-frontier hadron collider (FCC-hh), which could, successively, be installed in the same 100 km tunnel. The scientific capabilities of the integrated FCC programme would serve the worldwide community throughout the 21st century. The FCC study also investigates an LHC energy upgrade, using FCC-hh technology. This document constitutes the second volume of the FCC Conceptual Design Report, devoted to the electron-positron collider FCC-ee. After summarizing the physics discovery opportunities, it presents the accelerator design, performance reach, a staged operation scenario, the underlying technologies, civil engineering, technical infrastructure, and an implementation plan. FCC-ee can be built with today's technology. Most of the FCC-ee infrastructure could be reused for FCC-hh. Combining concepts from past and present lepton colliders and adding a few novel elements, the FCC-ee design promises outstandingly high luminosity. This will make the FCC-ee a unique precision instrument to study the heaviest known particles (Z, W and H bosons and the top quark), offering great direct and indirect sensitivity to new physics.

Role for Rab7 in maturation of late autophagic vacuoles

The small GTP binding protein Rab7 has a role in the late endocytic pathway and lysosome biogenesis. The role of mammalian Rab7 in autophagy is, however, unknown. We have addressed this by inhibiting Rab7 function with RNA interference and overexpression of dominant negative Rab7. We show here that Rab7 was needed for the formation of preferably perinuclear, large aggregates, where the autophagosome marker LC3 colocalised with Rab7 and late endosomal and lysosomal markers. By electron microscopy we showed that these large aggregates corresponded to autophagic vacuoles surrounding late endosomal or lysosomal vesicles. Our experiments with quantitative electron microscopy showed that Rab7 was not needed for the initial maturation of early autophagosomes to late autophagic vacuoles, but that it participated in the final maturation of late autophagic vacuoles. Finally, we showed that the recruitment of Rab7 to autophagic vacuoles was retarded in cells deficient in the lysosomal membrane proteins Lamp1 and Lamp2, which we have recently shown to accumulate late autophagic vacuoles during starvation. In conclusion, our results showed a role for Rab7 in the final maturation of late autophagic vacuoles.

Search for the lepton flavour violating decay $$\mu ^+ \rightarrow \mathrm {e}^+ \gamma $$ μ + → e + γ with the full dataset of the MEG experiment

The final results of the search for the lepton flavour violating decay Î1⁄4+→ e+Î3 based on the full dataset collected by the MEG experiment at the Paul Scherrer Institut in the period 2009–2013 and totalling 7.5 × 1014stopped muons on target are presented. No significant excess of events is observed in the dataset with respect to the expected background and a new upper limit on the branching ratio of this decay of B(Î1⁄4+→ e+Î3) &amp;lt; 4.2 × 10- 13(90Â&amp;nbsp;% confidence level) is established, which represents the most stringent limit on the existence of this decay to date.

Performance of the ATLAS trigger system in 2015

During 2015 the ATLAS experiment recorded [Formula: see text] of proton-proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of [Formula: see text]. The ATLAS trigger system is a crucial component of the experiment, responsible for selecting events of interest at a recording rate of approximately 1 kHz from up to 40 MHz of collisions. This paper presents a short overview of the changes to the trigger and data acquisition systems during the first long shutdown of the LHC and shows the performance of the trigger system and its components based on the 2015 proton-proton collision data.

By using the ATLAS detector, observations have been made of a centrality-dependent dijet asymmetry in the collisions of lead ions at the Large Hadron Collider. In a sample of lead-lead events with a per-nucleon center of mass energy of 2.76 TeV, selected with a minimum bias trigger, jets are reconstructed in fine-grained, longitudinally segmented electromagnetic and hadronic calorimeters. The transverse energies of dijets in opposite hemispheres are observed to become systematically more unbalanced with increasing event centrality leading to a large number of events which contain highly asymmetric dijets. This is the first observation of an enhancement of events with such large dijet asymmetries, not observed in proton-proton collisions, which may point to an interpretation in terms of strong jet energy loss in a hot, dense medium.

Frequency analysis via copulas: Theoretical aspects and applications to hydrological events

In this paper we provide a general theoretical framework exploiting copulas for studying the return periods of hydrological events; in particular, we consider events depending upon the joint behavior of two nonindependent random variables, an approach which can easily be generalized to the multivariate case. We show that using copulas may greatly simplify the calculations and may even yield analytical expressions for the isolines of the return periods, both in the unconditional and in the conditional case. In addition, we show how a new probability distribution may be associated with the return period of specific events and introduce the definitions of sub‐, super‐, and critical events as well as those of primary and secondary return periods. An illustration of the techniques proposed is provided by analyzing some case studies already examined in literature.

FCC Physics Opportunities

Abstract: We review the physics opportunities of the Future Circular Collider, covering its e+e-, pp, ep and heavy ion programmes. We describe the measurement capabilities of each FCC component, addressing the study of electroweak, Higgs and strong interactions, the top quark and flavour, as well as phenomena beyond the Standard Model. We highlight the synergy and complementarity of the different colliders, which will contribute to a uniquely coherent and ambitious research programme, providing an unmatchable combination of precision and sensitivity to new physics.

The energy spectrum of cosmic rays above $2.5\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{18}\text{ }\mathrm{eV}$, derived from 20 000 events recorded at the Pierre Auger Observatory, is described. The spectral index $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ of the particle flux, $J\ensuremath{\propto}{E}^{\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\gamma}}$, at energies between $4\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{18}\text{ }\mathrm{eV}$ and $4\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{19}\text{ }\mathrm{eV}$ is $2.69\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.02(\mathrm{stat})\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.06(\mathrm{syst})$, steepening to $4.2\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.4(\mathrm{stat})\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.06(\mathrm{syst})$ at higher energies. The hypothesis of a single power law is rejected with a significance greater than 6 standard deviations. The data are consistent with the prediction by Greisen and by Zatsepin and Kuz'min.

FCC-hh: The Hadron Collider

Abstract: In response to the 2013 Update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics (EPPSU), the Future Circular Collider (FCC) study was launched as a world-wide international collaboration hosted by CERN. The FCC study covered an energy-frontier hadron collider (FCC-hh), a highest-luminosity high-energy lepton collider (FCC-ee), the corresponding 100 km tunnel infrastructure, as well as the physics opportunities of these two colliders, and a high-energy LHC, based on FCC-hh technology. This document constitutes the third volume of the FCC Conceptual Design Report, devoted to the hadron collider FCC-hh. It summarizes the FCC-hh physics discovery opportunities, presents the FCC-hh accelerator design, performance reach, and staged operation plan, discusses the underlying technologies, the civil engineering and technical infrastructure, and also sketches a possible implementation. Combining ingredients from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the high-luminosity LHC upgrade and adding novel technologies and approaches, the FCC-hh design aims at significantly extending the energy frontier to 100 TeV. Its unprecedented centre of-mass collision energy will make the FCC-hh a unique instrument to explore physics beyond the Standard Model, offering great direct sensitivity to new physics and discoveries.

Global analysis of neutrino masses, mixings, and phases: Entering the era of leptonic<mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mml:mi>C</mml:mi><mml:mi>P</mml:mi></mml:math>violation searches

We perform a global analysis of neutrino oscillation data, including high-precision measurements of the neutrino mixing angle ${\ensuremath{\theta}}_{13}$ at reactor experiments, which have confirmed previous indications in favor of ${\ensuremath{\theta}}_{13}&gt;0$. Recent data presented at the Neutrino 2012 conference are also included. We focus on the correlations between ${\ensuremath{\theta}}_{13}$ and the mixing angle ${\ensuremath{\theta}}_{23}$, as well as between ${\ensuremath{\theta}}_{13}$ and the neutrino $CP$-violation phase $\ensuremath{\delta}$. We find interesting indications for ${\ensuremath{\theta}}_{23}&lt;\ensuremath{\pi}/4$ and possible hints for $\ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\sim}\ensuremath{\pi}$, with no significant difference between normal and inverted mass hierarchy.

Muon reconstruction performance of the ATLAS detector in proton–proton collision data at $$\sqrt{s}$$ s =13 TeV

collision data, measurements of the reconstruction efficiency, as well as of the momentum scale and resolution, are presented and compared to Monte Carlo simulations. The reconstruction efficiency is measured to be close to [Formula: see text] over most of the covered phase space ([Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] GeV). The isolation efficiency varies between 93 and [Formula: see text] depending on the selection applied and on the momentum of the muon. Both efficiencies are well reproduced in simulation. In the central region of the detector, the momentum resolution is measured to be [Formula: see text] ([Formula: see text]) for muons from [Formula: see text] ([Formula: see text]) decays, and the momentum scale is known with an uncertainty of [Formula: see text]. In the region [Formula: see text], the [Formula: see text] resolution for muons from [Formula: see text] decays is [Formula: see text] while the precision of the momentum scale for low-[Formula: see text] muons from [Formula: see text] decays is about [Formula: see text].

Discrete and Continuous Nonlinear Schrödinger Systems

In recent years there have been important and far reaching developments in the study of nonlinear waves and a class of nonlinear wave equations which arise frequently in applications. The wide interest in this field comes from the understanding of special waves called 'solitons' and the associated development of a method of solution to a class of nonlinear wave equations termed the inverse scattering transform (IST). Before these developments, very little was known about the solutions to such 'soliton equations'. The IST technique applies to both continuous and discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equations of scalar and vector type. Also included is the IST for the Toda lattice and nonlinear ladder network, which are well-known discrete systems. This book, first published in 2003, presents the detailed mathematical analysis of the scattering theory; soliton solutions are obtained and soliton interactions, both scalar and vector, are analyzed. Much of the material is not available in the previously-published literature.

Two-particle correlations in relative azimuthal angle ($\ensuremath{\Delta}\ensuremath{\phi}$) and pseudorapidity ($\ensuremath{\Delta}\ensuremath{\eta}$) are measured in $\sqrt{{s}_{\mathrm{NN}}}=5.02\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{TeV}$ $p+\mathrm{Pb}$ collisions using the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The measurements are performed using approximately $1\text{ }\text{ }\ensuremath{\mu}{\mathrm{b}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ of data as a function of transverse momentum (${p}_{\mathrm{T}}$) and the transverse energy ($\ensuremath{\Sigma}{E}_{\mathrm{T}}^{\mathrm{Pb}}$) summed over $3.1&lt;\ensuremath{\eta}&lt;4.9$ in the direction of the Pb beam. The correlation function, constructed from charged particles, exhibits a long-range ($2&lt;|\ensuremath{\Delta}\ensuremath{\eta}|&lt;5$) ``near-side'' ($\ensuremath{\Delta}\ensuremath{\phi}\ensuremath{\sim}0$) correlation that grows rapidly with increasing $\ensuremath{\Sigma}{E}_{\mathrm{T}}^{\mathrm{Pb}}$. A long-range ``away-side'' ($\ensuremath{\Delta}\ensuremath{\phi}\ensuremath{\sim}\ensuremath{\pi}$) correlation, obtained by subtracting the expected contributions from recoiling dijets and other sources estimated using events with small $\ensuremath{\Sigma}{E}_{\mathrm{T}}^{\mathrm{Pb}}$, is found to match the near-side correlation in magnitude, shape (in $\ensuremath{\Delta}\ensuremath{\eta}$ and $\ensuremath{\Delta}\ensuremath{\phi}$) and $\ensuremath{\Sigma}{E}_{\mathrm{T}}^{\mathrm{Pb}}$ dependence. The resultant $\ensuremath{\Delta}\ensuremath{\phi}$ correlation is approximately symmetric about $\ensuremath{\pi}/2$, and is consistent with a dominant $\mathrm{cos}2\ensuremath{\Delta}\ensuremath{\phi}$ modulation for all $\ensuremath{\Sigma}{E}_{\mathrm{T}}^{\mathrm{Pb}}$ ranges and particle ${p}_{\mathrm{T}}$.

Charged-particle multiplicities in<i>pp</i>interactions measured with the ATLAS detector at the LHC

CERN-LHC. Measurement of inclusive charged particle distributions in proton proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies 0.9, 2.36 and 7 TeV using a single-arm minimum-bias trigger. Distributions of charged particle multiplicity and its dependence on pseudorapidity and transverse momentum are presented from ~190 mub-1 of data at 7 Tev, ~7 mub-1 at 0.9 TeV, and ~0.1 mub-1 at 2.36 GeV. UPDATE 20/05/2016: A wrong point was removed from table 16.

Major osteoporotic fragility fractures: Risk factor updates and societal impact

Osteoporosis is a silent disease without any evidence of disease until a fracture occurs. Approximately 200 million people in the world are affected by osteoporosis and 8.9 million fractures occur each year worldwide. Fractures of the hip are a major public health burden, by means of both social cost and health condition of the elderly because these fractures are one of the main causes of morbidity, impairment, decreased quality of life and mortality in women and men. The aim of this review is to analyze the most important factors related to the enormous impact of osteoporotic fractures on population. Among the most common risk factors, low body mass index; history of fragility fracture, environmental risk, early menopause, smoking, lack of vitamin D, endocrine disorders (for example insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus), use of glucocorticoids, excessive alcohol intake, immobility and others represented the main clinical risk factors associated with augmented risk of fragility fracture. The increasing trend of osteoporosis is accompanied by an underutilization of the available preventive strategies and only a small number of patients at high fracture risk are recognized and successively referred for therapy. This report provides analytic evidences to assess the best practices in osteoporosis management and indications for the adoption of a correct healthcare strategy to significantly reduce the osteoporosis burden. Early diagnosis is the key to resize the impact of osteoporosis on healthcare system. In this context, attention must be focused on the identification of high fracture risk among osteoporotic patients. It is necessary to increase national awareness campaigns across countries in order to reduce the osteoporotic fractures incidence.

Measurement of the azimuthal anisotropy for charged particle production in<mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:msqrt><mml:msub><mml:mi>s</mml:mi><mml:mrow><mml:mi>N</mml:mi><mml:mi>N</mml:mi></mml:mrow></mml:msub></mml:msqrt><mml:mo>=</mml:mo><mml:mn>2.76</mml:mn></mml:mrow></mml:math>TeV lead-lead collisions with the ATLAS detector

Differential measurements of charged particle azimuthal anisotropy are presented for lead-lead collisions at s NN = 2.76 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC, based on an integrated luminosity of approximately 8 b -1 . This anisotropy is characterized via a Fourier expansion of the distribution of charged particles in azimuthal angle relative to the reaction plane, with the coefficients v n denoting the magnitude of the anisotropy. Significant v 2 -v 6 values are obtained as a function of transverse momentum (0.5 < p T < 20 GeV), pseudorapidity (|| < 2.5), and centrality using an event plane method. The v n values for n 3 are found to vary weakly with both and centrality, and their p T dependencies are found to follow an approximate scaling relation,
