Abstract Three of the most pressing challenges in managing change are: (1) helping managers, who are always in those circumstances under huge time pressure, to identify and take actions; (2) gaining commitment to change; and (3) measuring progress (especially on the softer 'cultural' acts). This paper sets out how managers cope with these challenges by using a simple questionnaire. It highlights findings from the database of overall questionnaire results on what people are saying about their organisations in the face of change. It shows how useful the tool can be to help people understand and discuss what are the business drivers of change in their organisations, as this leads to improved commitment and involvement, and hence action and improved performance.
