AIM: Conventional care of prematurely born infants involves extended maternal-infant separation and incubator care. Recent research has shown that separation causes adverse effects. Maternal-infant skin-to-skin contact (SSC) provides an alternative habitat to the incubator, with proven benefits for stable prematures; this has not been established for unstable or newborn low-birthweight infants. SSC from birth was therefore compared to incubator care for infants between 1200 and 2199 g at birth. METHODS: This was a prospective, unblinded, randomized controlled clinical trial; potential subjects were identified before delivery and randomized by computerized minimization technique at 5 min if eligible. Standardized care and observations were maintained for 6 h. Stability was measured in terms of a set of pre-determined physiological parameters, and a composite cardio-respiratory stabilization score (SCRIP). RESULTS: 34 infants were analysed in comparable groups: 3/18 SSC compared to 12/13 incubator babies exceeded the pre-determined parameters (p < 0.001). Stabilization scores were 77.11 for SSC versus 74.23 for incubator (maximum 78), mean difference 2.88 (95% CI: 0.3-5.46, p = 0.031). All 18 SSC subjects were stable in the sixth hour, compared to 6/13 incubator infants. Eight out of 13 incubator subjects experienced hypothermia. CONCLUSION: Newborn care provided by skin-to-skin contact on the mother's chest results in better physiological outcomes and stability than the same care provided in closed servo-controlled incubators. The cardio-respiratory instability seen in separated infants in the first 6 h is consistent with mammalian "protest-despair" biology, and with "hyper-arousal and dissociation" response patterns described in human infants: newborns should not be separated from their mothers.
Abstract Background: Tubulointerstitial kidney disease is a common cause of illness and death in pet cats and is typically not associated with overt proteinuria. Hypothesis: Proteinuria would be independently related to survival in cats with renal failure, with or without hypertension. Animals: The study included 136 client-owned cats; 28 apparently normal, 14 hypertensive but not azotemic, 66 azotemic but not hypertensive, and 28 both hypertensive and azotemic. Methods: Cox's proportional hazards model was used to determine the influence of initial plasma creatinine concentration, proteinuria (urine protein-to-creatinine ratio or albumin-to-creatinine ratio), age, and systemic hypertension on the risk of death or euthanasia during the follow-up period. Multivariable linear regression was used to determine the relation between severity of proteinuria and predictive variables, including age, plasma creatinine concentration, systolic blood pressure, sex, and urine specific gravity. Results: Plasma creatinine concentration and proteinuria were very highly related to survival. The hazard ratio (95% confidence intervals) for death or euthanasia was 2.9 (1.4–6.3) and 4.0 (2.0–8.0) for urine protein-to-creatinine ratio 0.2-0.4 and &gt;0.4, respectively, compared with the baseline group with a urine protein-to-creatinine ratio of &lt;0.2 and were 2.4 (1.2–4.8) and 4.9 (2.3–10.2) for an albumin-to-creatinine ratio of 30–82 mg/g and &lt;82 mg/g, respectively, compared with a baseline group with albumin-to-creatinine ratio of &lt;30 mg/g. Treated hypertensive cats did not have reduced survival, although systolic blood pressure, together with plasma creatinine concentration was positively related to the magnitude of proteinuria. Conclusions and Clinical Importance: Despite the relatively low concentrations of proteinuria typical of chronic renal disease in cats, this measurement is of prognostic significance.
Determining the bacterial composition of the canine oral microbiome is of interest for two primary reasons. First, while the human oral microbiome has been well studied using molecular techniques, the oral microbiomes of other mammals have not been studied in equal depth using culture independent methods. This study allows a comparison of the number of bacterial taxa, based on 16S rRNA-gene sequence comparison, shared between humans and dogs, two divergent mammalian species. Second, canine oral bacteria are of interest to veterinary and human medical communities for understanding their roles in health and infectious diseases. The bacteria involved are mostly unnamed and not linked by 16S rRNA-gene sequence identity to a taxonomic scheme. This manuscript describes the analysis of 5,958 16S rRNA-gene sequences from 65 clone libraries. Full length 16S rRNA reference sequences have been obtained for 353 canine bacterial taxa, which were placed in 14 bacterial phyla, 23 classes, 37 orders, 66 families, and 148 genera. Eighty percent of the taxa are currently unnamed. The bacterial taxa identified in dogs are markedly different from those of humans with only 16.4% of oral taxa are shared between dogs and humans based on a 98.5% 16S rRNA sequence similarity cutoff. This indicates that there is a large divergence in the bacteria comprising the oral microbiomes of divergent mammalian species. The historic practice of identifying animal associated bacteria based on phenotypic similarities to human bacteria is generally invalid. This report describes the diversity of the canine oral microbiome and provides a provisional 16S rRNA based taxonomic scheme for naming and identifying unnamed canine bacterial taxa.
BACKGROUND: There is an association between overweight status and life span in kenneled dogs, but a similar association has not been reported for pet dogs. OBJECTIVES: To examine the effects of being overweight in middle age on the life span of neutered client-owned dogs. ANIMALS: Fifty-thousand seven-hundred eighty seven middle-aged neutered client-owned dogs attending a network of approximately 900 veterinary hospitals across North America. METHODS: Retrospective case-control study. For each of 12 breeds, groups of dogs aged between 6.5 and 8.5 years were identified as being in "overweight" or "normal" body condition. Within each breed and sex, differences in life span between dogs in normal body condition and overweight body condition in the 2 groups were then analyzed by Cox proportional hazards models. RESULTS: For all breeds, instantaneous risk of death for dogs in overweight body condition was greater than those in normal body condition throughout the age range studied, with hazard ratios ranging from 1.35 (99.79% confidence interval [CI] 1.05-1.73) for German Shepherd dog to 2.86 (99.79% CI 2.14-3.83) for Yorkshire Terrier. In all breeds, median life span was shorter in overweight compared with normal weight dogs, with the difference being greatest in Yorkshire Terriers (overweight: 13.7 years, 99.79% CI 13.3-14.2; normal: 16.2 years, 99.79% CI 15.7-16.5) and least in German Shepherd dogs (overweight: 12.1 years, 99.79% CI 11.8-12.4; normal: 12.5 years, 99.79% CI 12.2-12.9). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: Veterinary professionals should consider promoting healthy body condition for dogs, particularly from midlife onward.
The meat industry is seeking to establish reassurance on traceability and production techniques that may help to promote confidence in the integrity and origin of their products. This paper reviews research and development activities for traceability and trackability in the meat industry. Achievements of individuals and research groups developing tools and techniques to improve the production process in handling and cutting meat portions for end users are discussed. In addition software/hardware, logistics and technical requirements for tracking material in a production process are introduced. With the aid of such established tools and techniques coupled with novel proposals, the authors offer a practical solution for the development of a tracking and traceability system within the meat industry. The proposed prototype system is capable of identifying and handling a product and the information attached to it throughout the production process to retail packs.
We hypothesized that acute myocardial infarction could be detected in standard two-dimensional echocardiograms of closed-chest dogs by evaluating regional echo amplitude distributions using computerized image analysis. We tested this hypothesis by performing standard, 2.4 MHz two-dimensional echoes before and 2 days after circumflex coronary occlusion in seven closed-chest dogs. Control and infarcted regions of interest were studied in digitized stop-frame images. Average gray level was calculated for each region of interest, and the shape of the gray-level distribution was analyzed by calculation of skewness and kurtosis and by qualitative features of shape. Average gray level increased significantly from the pre- to postocclusion images in the infarcted regions (16.7 +/- 4.2 vs. 32.4 +/- 4.4 units, P less than 0.01), but not in the control regions (17.4 +/- 4 vs. 22.3 +/- 5.5., P = NS). Average gray level could not distinguish between infarcted and normal regions within the postocclusion images (36 +/- 5.2 vs. 33.6 +/- 5.8, P = NS). Three independent observers qualitatively evaluated histogram shape and correctly identified 7/7 MI regions (100% sensitivity) and 14/20 normal regions (70% specificity). Quantitatively, infarct regions exhibited a significant decrease in kurtosis from pre- to postocclusion images (7.1 +/- 4.0 vs. 5.2 +/- 2.9, P = NS). Within postocclusion images, infarcted regions displayed a significantly lower kurtosis than did normal regions (0.27 +/- .47 vs. 2.5 +/- 1.0, P less than .01). We conclude that acute myocardial infarction may be detected in closed-chest dogs by analyzing regional echo amplitude data from standard two-dimensional echocardiograms.
Abstract Background: Obesity is the most common nutritional disease in dogs. Although weight loss by dietary caloric energy restriction is successful in experimental studies, there is limited information on success of such programs in client-owned dogs who are obese. Further, no information currently exists on the changes in body composition during weight loss in clinical cases. Hypothesis: Key determinants of outcome of weight loss, including energy allocation and body composition, are influenced by both individual and weight program factors. Animals: Nineteen client-owned dogs with naturally occurring obesity. Methods: In this prospective clinical study, body composition was quantified by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry before and after weight loss on an individually tailored program that incorporated a high-protein and moderate-fiber diet. Results: Mean percentage weight loss was 18% (range, 6–29%), and mean rate of weight loss was 0.85% per week (range, 0.35–1.56%). Mean energy allocation required to achieve weight loss was 60% of maintenance energy requirement at target weight (MERTW) (range, 50–82%). Significant dietary noncompliance was reported (mean, 1.0% MERTW; range, 0.0–9.5%). The mean composition of tissue lost was 84:15:1 (fat: lean: bone mineral content [BMC]). Lean tissue loss was positively associated with overall percentage of weight loss (Pearson correlation coefficient [Rp] = 0.591, P= .008), whereas BMC loss was greater in retrievers compared with other breeds (1.9%± 1.16% versus 0.8%± 0.44%; P= .008). Conclusions and Clinical Importance: This clinical study demonstrated body composition changes during weight loss in dogs. Conventional programs produced safe weight loss, but marked energy restriction was required and the rate of loss was slower than in experimental studies.
Plasma concentrations of glucose and insulin following a meal were compared in twelve Thoroughbred mares fed a pelleted concentrate (PC), a traditional sweet feed high in sugar and starch (SS), or a feed high in fat and fiber (FF). The feeds had similar DE and CP but differed in fat (19, 32, and 166 g/kg DM, respectively), NDF (199, 185, and 369 g/kg DM, respectively) and nonstructural carbohydrates (574, 645, and 247 g/kg, respectively). Mares were randomly assigned to two groups balanced for foaling date and weight. All mares received PC in late gestation; then, after foaling, one group was fed SS and the other FF for trials in early and late lactation. Mares were placed in stalls and deprived of feed overnight. A series of blood samples was collected via a jugular catheter from 0 (baseline) to 390 min after consumption of 1.82 kg of feed. Plasma was analyzed for glucose and insulin. Baseline values, peak values, and areas under curves (AUC) were compared by ANOVA. Baseline values were 74.7 +/- 10.9 mg/dL for glucose and 5.86 +/- 1.80 mIU/L for insulin for all diets and stages. Responses to PC did not differ between the two groups (P > 0.34), indicating the groups were metabolically similar. Peak plasma glucose and insulin concentrations were higher (P < 0.001) in the SS group than in the FF group during early and late lactation. Similarly, glucose and insulin AUC were larger (P < 0.003) in SS than in FF during early and late lactation. These results indicate that metabolic fluctuations are moderated by the replacement of sugar and starch with fat and fiber. This replacement may reduce the risk of certain digestive and metabolic disorders that have been linked to feeding meals of grain-based concentrates to pregnant or lactating mares.
REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: The relative influences of obesity and adaptation to high glycaemic diets on the development of insulin dysregulation in equids are unclear. OBJECTIVES: To determine whether increased adiposity per se is responsible for the decreased insulin sensitivity often observed in obese horses or whether a dietary glycaemic response is critically important. STUDY DESIGN: Randomised controlled trial. METHODS: Eighteen horses and ponies were studied over a 20-week period. They received ad libitum hay plus either a high fat (low glycaemic) diet (FAT; n = 6) or a similar (isocaloric) diet containing 1.5 g/kg bwt once daily glucose (GLU; n = 6) to induce obesity. A third group received a control ration (CON; n = 6). Adiposity was monitored using body condition score (BCS) and total body fat mass percentage (TBFM) determined using a deuterium oxide dilution technique. Insulin sensitivity was assessed using a frequently sampled i.v. glucose tolerance test. Plasma concentrations of glucose, insulin, leptin, adiponectin, tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and serum amyloid A (SAA) were measured. RESULTS: The FAT and GLU groups became obese (BCS ≥7) whereas the CON group maintained moderate condition (BCS ≤6). Total body fat mass and leptin concentrations were increased in the FAT and GLU groups than in the CON group (P<0.001 and P = 0.003, respectively). Values for both insulin-dependent (SI) and insulin-independent (Sg) glucose disposal were higher in the GLU group compared with the FAT and CON groups (P = 0.006 and P = 0.03, respectively). There were no differences in adiponectin, TNF-α or SAA between groups (all P≥0.4). CONCLUSIONS: Increased adiposity did not reduce insulin sensitivity in either the FAT or the GLU diet groups, suggesting that obesity per se might not be responsible for the lower SI values reported in previous studies. Contrary to expectations, once daily glucose appeared to increase insulin sensitivity. Further work is required into the dietary causes of insulin resistance in equids.
Periodontal disease is the most widespread oral disease in dogs. Whilst the involvement of bacteria in the aetiology of periodontitis is well established the role of individual species and their complex interactions with the host is not well understood. The objective of this research was therefore to perform a longitudinal study in dogs to identify the changes that occur in subgingival bacterial communities during the transition from mild gingivitis to the early stages of periodontitis (<25% attachment loss). Subgingival plaque samples were collected from individual teeth of 52 miniature schnauzer dogs every six weeks for up to 60 weeks. The microbial composition of plaque samples was determined using 454-pyrosequencing of the 16S rDNA. A group of aerobic Gram negative species, including Bergeyella zoohelcum COT-186, Moraxella sp. COT-017, Pasteurellaceae sp. COT-080, and Neisseria shayeganii COT-090 decreased in proportion as teeth progressed to mild periodontitis. In contrast, there was less evidence that increases in the proportion of individual species were associated with the onset of periodontitis, although a number of species (particularly members of the Firmicutes) became more abundant as gingivitis severity increased. There were small increases in Shannon diversity, suggesting that plaque community membership remains relatively stable but that bacterial proportions change during progression into periodontitis. This is the first study to demonstrate the temporal dynamics of the canine oral microbiota; it showed that periodontitis results from a microbial succession predominantly characterised by a reduction of previously abundant, health associated taxa.
Integrated ultrasonic backscatter has been related to collagen deposition in fibrotic myocardium. The purpose of our study was to measure the integrated ultrasonic backscatter in the right and left ventricles of 10 normal freshly excised canine hearts and five normal formalin-fixed human hearts. A 2.25 MHz, 50% fractional bandwidth transducer was positioned at the transducer focal distance from the epicardium. The radio frequency backscatter signal, excluding specular reflections, was digitized, squared, and integrated to yield the integrated ultrasonic backscatter (in decibels down from a 100% reflector). The segment of myocardium corresponding to the integrated ultrasonic backscatter sample volume was excised and assayed for hydroxyproline, a marker for collagen. A second purpose of our study was to evaluate the influence of fixation with formalin on the backscatter. Regional integrated ultrasonic backscatter was therefore measured in 10 freshly excised canine left ventricles, which were fixed in 10% formalin for 2 weeks. Integrated ultrasonic backscatter measurements were then repeated. In freshly excised canine hearts, the integrated ultrasonic backscatter from right ventricle was higher than that from left ventricle (-60.4 +/- 1.6 [SEM] vs -66.9 +/- 1.0 dB; p less than .001). The collagen content of right ventricle was also higher than that of left ventricle (4.40 +/- 0.26 [SEM] vs 3.58 +/- 0.13 micrograms/mg dry weight; p less than .005). Similar results were obtained in human hearts. There were no correlations between integrated ultrasonic backscatter and collagen content (r = .28 and .32 for dogs and humans, respectively).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
BACKGROUND: The importance of including exercise with dietary modification for the management of obese equids is not clearly understood. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effect of a practical low-intensity exercise regimen, in addition to dietary restriction, on indices of insulin sensitivity (SI) and plasma adipokine concentrations in obese equids. ANIMALS: Twenty-four obese (body condition score [BCS] ≥ 7/9) horses and ponies. METHODS: Over a 12-week period, animals received either dietary restriction only (DIET) or dietary restriction plus low-intensity exercise (DIET+EX). All animals were provided with a restricted ration of grass hay at 1.25% body weight (BW) on a dry matter basis, providing 82.5% estimated digestible energy requirements. The DIET+EX group undertook low-intensity exercise 5 days per week on an automated horse walker. Before and after weight loss, total body fat mass (TBFM) was determined, indices of SI were calculated using minimal model analysis of a frequently sampled IV glucose tolerance test, and adipokines plus inflammatory biomarkers were measured using validated assays. RESULTS: Decreases in BCS, BW, and TBFM were similar between groups (all P > .05). After weight loss, animals in both groups had decreased basal insulin and leptin concentrations, and increased adiponectin concentrations (all P < .001). Furthermore, animals in the DIET+EX group had significantly improved SI and decreased serum amyloid A concentrations relative to animals in the DIET group (both P = .01). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: Regular low-intensity exercise provided additional health benefits compared with dietary restriction alone in this population of obese equids.
Tooth-brushing every other day did not maintain clinically healthy gingivae in dogs. The daily addition of a dental hygiene chew to a regimen of tooth brushing every other day reduced the gingivitis scores and reduced the accumulation of dental deposits (plaque, calculus and stain). Daily tooth-brushing should be the recommendation to the dog owner irrespective of dietary regimen. Providing a dental hygiene chew daily seems to give an added health benefit when tooth-brushing is less frequent, and provides the pet owner with a useful adjunct for homecare.
The effects of ovariohysterectomy on bodyweight, composition and condition score were evaluated in 49 cats that were fed ad libitum and 11 cats that had their food allowances controlled with the aim of maintaining a stable bodyweight. In cats fed ad libitum, bodyweight increased by an average of 31 per cent in the 12 months following ovariohysterectomy compared with 3.1 per cent over the 12 months before surgery, and this was largely due to increased body fat content. There was no difference in weight gain between cats fed dry or canned foods, but weight gain was inversely related to age and bodyweight at the time of neutering. Mean bodyweight increased by 7.5 per cent in the controlled feeding group, compared with 3.6 per cent over the 12 months before surgery, and individual bodyweights were maintained to within 10 per cent of pre-neutering values in nine cats. The other two cats experienced substantial weight gain (+20 per cent and +36 per cent), despite being fed only 40 kcal/kg/day. There were no significant changes in body composition of cats with controlled dietary allowances and their condition scores were significantly lower than those of cats fed ad libitum. The results confirm a link between ovariohysterectomy and the development of obesity in cats with free access to food, and indicate that substantial reductions in energy intake are required to prevent weight gain in such cats.
The prevalence of odontoclastic resorptive lesions (ORLs) was determined in a clinically healthy cat population (228 cats) using both clinical (oral examination) and radiographic (full-mouth series with intraorally positioned dental film) methods. The overall prevalence rate was 29 per cent (mean age of the cat population 4.9 years). The mandibular third premolars (307, 407) were the most commonly affected tooth and the pattern of ORL development was symmetrical in most cats. The risk of having ORLs was found to increase with increasing age and cats with clinically and radiographically missing teeth were more likely to have the condition. Neutering, gender, age at neutering or mean whole mouth gingivitis index did not affect the prevalence of ORLs.
BACKGROUND: Periodontal disease (PD) is the most widespread oral disease in dogs and has been associated with serious systemic diseases. The disease is more prevalent in small breeds compared to large breeds and incidence increases with advancing age. In prevalence studies 84% of Beagles over the age of 3 and 100% of Poodles over the age of 4 were diagnosed with PD. Current knowledge of the rate of progression of PD is limited. The objective of this study was to determine the rate of PD progression in Miniature Schnauzers, an at risk small breed of dog. Dogs (n = 52, age 1.3-6.9 years) who had received a regular oral care regime prior to this study were assessed for levels of gingivitis and periodontitis around the whole gingival margin in every tooth under general anaesthetic. Assessments were conducted approximately every six weeks for up to 60 weeks following the cessation of the oral care regime. RESULTS: All of the 2155 teeth assessed entered the study with some level of gingivitis. 23 teeth entered the study with periodontitis, observed across 12 dogs aged between 1.3 and 6.9 years. 35 dogs had at least 12 teeth progress to periodontitis within 60 weeks. Of the teeth that progressed to periodontitis, 54% were incisors. The lingual aspect of the incisors was significantly more likely to be affected (p < 0.001). The severity of gingivitis in periodontitis-affected teeth was variable with 24% of the aspects affected having very mild gingivitis, 36% mild gingivitis and 40% moderate gingivitis. Periodontitis progression rate was significantly faster in older dogs. Only one dog (age 3.5) did not have any teeth progress to periodontitis after 60 weeks. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first study to have assessed the progression rate of periodontitis in Miniature Schnauzers and highlights that with no oral care regime, the early stages of periodontitis develop rapidly in this breed. An oral care regime and twice yearly veterinary dental health checks should be provided from an early age for this breed and other breeds with similar periodontitis incidence rates.
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative and inflammatory disease of synovial joints that is characterized by the loss of articular cartilage, for which there is increasing interest in natural remedies. Curcumin (diferuloylmethane) is the main polyphenol in the spice turmeric, derived from rhizomes of the plant Curcuma longa. Curcumin has potent chemopreventive properties and has been shown to inhibit nuclear factor kappaB-mediated inflammatory signaling in many cell types, including chondrocytes. In this study, normal articular cartilage was harvested from metacarpophalangeal and metatarsophalangeal joints of eight horses, euthanized for reasons other than research purposes, to establish an explant model mimicking the inflammatory events that occur in OA. Initially, cartilage explants (N= 8) were stimulated with increasing concentrations of the proinflammatory cytokine IL-1beta to select effective doses for inducing cartilage degeneration in the explant model. Separate cartilage explants were then cotreated with IL-1beta at either 10 ng/mL (n= 3) or 25 ng/mL (n= 3) and curcumin (0.1 micromol/L, 0.5 micromol/L, 1 micromol/L, 10 micromol/L, and 100 micromol/L). After 5 days, the percentage of glycosaminoglycan (GAG) release from the explants was assessed using a dimethylmethylene blue colorimetric assay. Curcumin (100 micromol/L) significantly reduced IL-1beta-stimulated GAG release in the explants by an average of 20% at 10 ng/mL and 27% at 25 ng/mL back to unstimulated control levels (P < 0.001). Our results suggest that this explant model effectively simulates the proinflammatory cytokine-mediated release of articular cartilage components seen in OA. Furthermore, the evidence suggests that the inflammatory cartilage explant model is useful for studying the effects of curcumin on inflammatory pathways and gene expression in IL-1beta-stimulated chondrocytes.
Regional two-dimensional (2D) echocardiographic amplitude patterns, or image texture, may be of diagnostic importance. Echocardiographic image texture is due in part to acoustic speckle, a complex pattern of interference of reflections from many small scatterers in tissue. The regional speckle pattern appears to be altered in several disorders associated with abnormalities in myocardial structure but also may be altered by a variety of characteristics of the scanning instrument. We hypothesized that quantitative measures of regional 2D echocardiographic image texture would vary as a function of position in range and azimuth within the field of view, even when imaging a uniform ensemble of scatterers. We tested this hypothesis by imaging a tissue-equivalent phantom with two phased-array scanners and two different methods of digitization. We analyzed the texture in several regions of interest separated in range and azimuth and found significant differences in quantitative texture measures as a function of position of the region of interest in the sector field of view (p values .006 to .0001 by multivariate analysis of variance). We found significant regional variability in texture with both scanners and both methods of digitization. We conclude that regional quantitative image texture in 2D echocardiograms varies as a function of range and azimuth, even when imaging a uniform ensemble of scatterers. This variability is related to several physical and instrument-related phenomena and precludes interpreting all regional texture alterations as indicating tissue structural abnormalities.
Abstract— The more important literature concerning neoplasia of cage birds is reviewed, and the incidence of the various types of tumour is discussed. Special attention is given to the neoplasms of budgerigars with reference to the age, sex and environment of the affected birds. This latter work is based on the results of 922 budgerigar autopsies carried out by the author. Résumé— La documentation la plus importante concernant la néoplasie des oiseaux en cage est étudiée ici, et la fréquence des différents types de tumeurs est discutée. Une attention spêiale est donnée au néoplasma des oiseaux en cage avec référence à l'âge, au sexe et à l'entourage des oiseaux atteints. Ce dernier travail se base sur les résultats de l'autopsie exêutée par l'auteur sur 922 oiseaux. Zusammenfassung— Hier wird das bedeutsamere Schrifttum über Neoplasie bei Zimmervögeln rezensiert und das Vorkommen der verschiedenen Geschwulstarten besprochen. Besondere Aufmerksamkeit wird Neoplasmen bei Sittichen in Bezug auf Alter, Geschlecht, Umgebungsumstände der betroffenen Vögel geschenkt. Diese letztere Arbeit beruht auf den Resultaten von 922 Sittich‐Autopsien, welche vom Verfasser vorgenommen wurden.
ABSTRACT The results of a survey of aspects of the reproductive activity in 449 breeding bitches owned by 198 breeders in England and Wales are reported. Information is provided on the seasonal incidence of oestrus in the total group and in different breeds. Most activity was observed in the February to May period. Oestrous interval data are also reported. Significant differences in the mean length can be shown between breeds though there was no clear correlation between the median length of the oestrous interval for a breed and the mean body weight of that breed. Pregnancy in the bitch was shown to cause a significant increase in the length of the current oestrous interval. Résumé. On rapporte les résultats d'un examen des différents aspects de l'activité de reproduction chez 449 chiennes reproductrices appartenant à 198 éleveurs en Angleterre et au Pays de Galles. On fournit des données sur l'incidence saisonnière de l'œstre pour l'ensemble du groupe et pour des races différentes. On a pu observer la plus grande activité dans la période de février à mai. On rapporte aussi des données sur les intervalles dans les périodes de l'œstre. On a relevé des différences importantes dans la durée moyenne d'après les races, quoiqu'il n'y ait aucune corrélation nette entre la durée moyenne de l'intervalle de l'œstre pour une race donnée et le poids moyen de l'animal de cette race. On remarqua que la grossesse causait une augmentation importante dans la durée de l'intervalle habituel de l'œstre. Zusammenfassung. Die Ergebnisse einer Zusammenstellung über die Fortpflanzungstätigkeit von 449 Zuchthündinnen im Besitz von 198 Züchtern in England und Wales werden berichtet. Informationen über die jahreszeitliche Häufigkeit des Östrus in der Gesamtgruppe und bei den verschiedenen Rassen werden angegeben. Die stärkste Aktivität wurde in der Periode Februar bis Mai beobachtet. Die Östrusintervalldaten werden ebenfalls angegeben. Signifikante Unter‐schiede in der mittleren Länge lassen sich zwischen verschiedenen Rassen zeigen, wenn auch keine klare Korrelation zwischen der mittleren Länge des Östrusintervalls bei einer Rase und dem mittleren Körpergewicht dieser Rasse bestand. Wie sich zeigte, verursachte die Trächtigkeit der Hündin eine signifikante Verlängerung des augenblicklichen Östrusintervalls.
