The second Novo Nordisk UK Research Foundation symposium was held on 15 October 2002. The symposium is held to celebrate the Foundation as well as to provide further education for the distinguished audience of health care professionals who have all been previous recipients of these awards. Insulin resistance and hypoglycaemia were the topics presented and discussed during the morning session chaired by Professor Stephanie Amiel (London). The speakers were Professor Gareth Williams (Liverpool), Professor Rury Holman (Oxford), Professor Simon Allison (Nottingham), Dr David Hepburn (Hull) and Dr Krystyna Matyka (Birmingham). The afternoon session, chaired by Mrs Anne Felton (London), looked at diabetic nephropathy and the future of diabetes, including new products. The speakers were Dr Luigi Gnudi (London), Dr Aled Phillips (Cardiff), Professor David Owens (Cardiff) and Professor David Matthews (Oxford). The Novo Nordisk UK research fellowships. A research fellowship is offered each year in clinical diabetes and is intended for doctors in the early stages of their specialist careers. The Novo Nordisk UK Grant. To provide ‘pump priming’ support, i.e. towards consumables, assays, equipment, etc. for doctors, nurses or scientists carrying out research in clinical diabetes. The Novo Nordisk diabetes fund, for nurses and professionals allied to medicine from primary and secondary care, to help further research and education in diabetes. The Novo Nordisk UK clinical research course for nurses in diabetes. For specialist nurses or research nurses who wish to conduct clinical research in diabetes. The Novo Nordisk primary care fellowship. A new category for 2003 offering a part-time research fellowship for up to five years.
