Abstract Green human resource management (HRM) practices can help organizations align their business strategies with the environment. Anchored in the resource‐based view of the firm, this study examines the influence of green HRM practices on sustainability using cross‐sectional data obtained from 112 large manufacturing firms in Malaysia. The results show that green recruitment and green training have positive effects on sustainability. However, green analysis and job description, green selection, green performance assessment, and green reward were not found to have any significant influence on sustainability. The model presented in this paper offers useful insights into the positive role of green HRM in the sustainability of manufacturing firms, and as previous studies exploring the link between green HRM and sustainability using empirical data from Malaysian manufacturing firms are scarce, this research is of significant importance for scholars and practitioners. The scope of this study focuses on emerging economies with a limited number of variables that are contextual and specific to the Malaysian economy. Future research could explore the relationship between green HRM and other variables that may contribute to the present framework in other contexts. Future studies may also consider each dimension of green HRM, or indeed other elements of green HRM, in relation to the different aspects of sustainability.

The goal of this study was to estimate the prevalence of low functional capacity and associated factors in Joaçaba, Santa Catarina State, Brazil, in 2003-2004, using a household survey (n = 345). Subjects who demonstrated difficulty in performing 6 or more activities or inability to conduct 3 of the activities according to the scale proposed by Rikli & Jones were defined as having low functional capacity. A questionnaire covering socioeconomic, demographic, housing, and self-perceived socioeconomic variables was applied. The study included distribution of the target variables' simple frequency, chi-square association tests, and multiple logistic regression analysis. The response rate was 92.7%, with a low functional prevalence of 37.1% (95%CI: 32.0-42.2). Mean age was 69.5 years. After adjusting for confounding variables, the factors associated with low functional capacity were: age > 70 years, female gender, and negative self-perceived socioeconomic status. A high percentage of elderly citizens in Joaçaba show low functional capacity, leading to dependency. Health programs that delay the onset of such disabilities could contribute to healthier aging.
Purpose This paper aims to investigate overlaps, complementarities and divergences between the literature on circular economy (CE) models and related literature in non-linear production models and frameworks, including CE, reverse logistics, closed-loop, industrial symbiosis and industrial ecology. Design/methodology/approach A systematic literature review was conducted focussing on the benefits of non-linear modes adoption. Findings The results show a high degree of convergence in findings, gaps and weaknesses of these literatures. Negative environmental, economic and operational impacts are understudied. There is a scarcity of studies identifying practices resulting in empirically tested benefits. The business and society case for non-linear production is still largely built upon conceptual studies, modelling and a few case studies. Despite a normative focus, there is very little use of theory, in particular, management theories. Research limitations/implications First, the authors use only one, albeit highly recognized database, Scopus. This database may have omitted some relevant research, journals such as the Journal of Cleaner Production and Resources Conservation & Recycling that are more likely to publish such research and also have a more interdisciplinary approach. This is an important gap and interesting result to claim for more interdisciplinary research. Second, the filtering process used and the focus on Association of Business Schools top journals may have also omitted some relevant research, such as a large stream of literature in specialist journals such as Resources Conservation and Recycling and the Journal of Cleaner Production . Practical implications There are contradictions, tensions and epistemological ambiguity that needs to be critically addressed. Such tensions may be associated with the knowledge field that gave rise to these different non-linear production approaches. Many of them appeared at the same time, but from different sciences and disciplines with their own perspectives. Then in doing so, they create confusion in the definitions of CE, assumptions underlying modelling and business choices arising from this complexity. This can be minimized through the critical interpretation of knowledge to elucidate epistemological quandaries to improve the understanding of the economic, social and environmental impacts of practices. Social implications In some way, this result makes sense, as the authors have limited the search to management, business and accounts journals, especially talking about Operations Management journals. This is an important gap and interesting result to claim for more interdisciplinary research. Originality/value In addition to gaps previously described, the authors identified areas of tensions where the literature offers inconclusive – often contradictory – findings requiring further exploration. A better understanding of these tensions is required to understand the impacts of non-linear production and develop policy guidelines for industry and policymakers to scale-up CE.
Abstract Studies of circular economy and innovation have received increasing attention in academic literature in the last quadrennium. They fill a managerial gap on how to operationalise the transition from the linear model to the circular. They show practices, tools and mechanisms that allow creation of business models based on circularity premises. In this article, we seek to identify the intellectual contours of this emerging field, conducting a review of the basic conceptual framework, with an analysis of articles published on the topic of circular economy and innovation. In summary, a systematic literature review was developed, whose final bibliographic portfolio consisted of 94 analysed papers. The results of the study show that eco‐innovation and innovation in business models are highlighted in this field. They are operationalised, mainly, by activating dynamic, relational and absorptive capabilities. The most important innovation practices in this context are waste management, eco‐design business models, product leasing and collaborative commerce. The main contribution of this study is to pave the way for new conceptual developments in organisational capabilities to make transition sustainable and serve as a support arsenal for the maturation of circular economy studies supported by the theory of innovation and also to link management practices to operational processes in the business and production environment favouring the transition to a circular business model. It generates insights for the scientific progression of studies and shows propositions that can be validated in future quantitative studies.
PURPOSE: To determine the effects of different surface moisture on the bond strength of an ethanol/water-based (Single Bond [SB]), an acetone-based (One-Step [OS]), and a water-based (Syntac Single Component [SC]) adhesive system to dentin. MATERIALS AND METHODS: On 90 human third molars, a flat superficial dentin surface was exposed by abrasion with 600-grit SiC paper. The adhesives were applied to a delimited area of 52 mm2 according to the manufacturers' instructions on either dry (oil-free air/30 s) or rewetted surfaces (1.5, 2.5, 3.5, 4.0 or 4.5 microl of distilled water), and composite crowns were constructed incrementally. After storage in distilled water at 37 degrees C for 24 h, the teeth were longitudinally sectioned in the "x" and "y" directions to obtain bonded sticks with a cross-sectional area of 0.8 mm2. The specimens were tested in tension at 0.5 mm/min and the fracture mode analyzed. Resultant bond strength was expressed as an index that includes bond strength values of the different fracture patterns and the specimens that failed during preparation for the microtensile testing. The data was analyzed by two-way ANOVA, Tukey's multiple comparison, and regression analysis. RESULTS: Highly significant main effects and interaction (p < 0.0001) were detected. A quadratic relationship between the bond strength index and the surface moisture was identified (R2 = 0.95, p < 0.001). SB showed a maximum bond strength (42.2 +/- 6.7 MPa) that was statistically similar (p = 0.4996) to the maximum bond strength of OS (40.1 +/- 4.6 MPa), although obtained at a different degree of moisture (ca 1.5 microl for SB and 3.5 microl for OS). SC showed its maximum bond strength (27.7 +/- 3.9 MPa) with 1.5 microl moisture. SB presented its highest bond strength at 1.5 microl of water, which was significantly higher than the bond strength obtained at any other degree of moisture (p < 0.05). OS achieved its maximum bond strength at 3.5 microl of water; however, that value was not statistically different (p > 0.05) from the values obtained with 1.5 microl to 4.0 microl of water. Similarly, highest bond strengths obtained with SC were not different (p > 0.05) within the range of 0 microl to 3.5 microl of water. CONCLUSION: All adhesive systems tested had a different moisture spectrum in which higher bond strengths were obtained. SB and SC performed better on a drier substrate, while OS showed better performance on wetter substrates. OS and SC had a broader range of moisture within which maximal bond strength could be achieved.
Anterior crown fractures are a common form of injury that mainly affects children and adolescents. The position of maxillary incisors and their eruptive pattern carries a significant risk for trauma. In the pre-adhesive era, fractured teeth needed to be restored either with pin-retained inlays or cast restorations that sacrificed healthy tooth structure and were a challenge for clinicians to match with adjacent teeth. The development of adhesive dentistry has allowed dentists to use the patient's own fragment to restore the fractured tooth. Since then, several successful case reports that use a variety of techniques and materials to reattach fractured teeth have been published. This article presents a comprehensive literature review on techniques and materials used to restore uncomplicated dental trauma.
The objective of this study was to assess the prevalence, aetiology, place of occurrence and rates of treatment of traumatic dental injuries (TDI) among 12-year-old schoolchildren in Herval D'Oeste, Brazil. A cross-sectional survey was carried out through clinical examination of upper and lower permanent incisors and interviews with 297, 12-year-old schoolchildren enrolled in public and private schools. Intra-examiner diagnosis variability, measured by kappa values on tooth-by-tooth basis was above 0.7. The prevalence of TDI was 17.3% (95% CI 12.7-21.9). Children who had an incisal overjet size >5 mm were 3.5 (95% CI 1.5-8.1) times more likely to have TDI than children who had an incisal overjet of <5 mm (P = 0.005). The most common type of injury found was enamel fracture alone. Of the total of 87 traumatized teeth, only 27.6% were treated. Acid etch restorations were the most common treatment provided. Acid etch restorations were the most common type of treatment needed. The majority of the cases of TDI occurred at home (17.8%) and at school (17.8%). Collisions (24.5%), mainly with doors, and physical leisure activities (20.0%) such as cycling and playing soccer were the main activities related to TDI aetiology. It can be concluded that there is a great treatment need reflecting neglect of TDI treatment. The main causes of TDI were collisions and physical leisure activities.
In this study, the antiulcerogenic effect of essential oil from Baccharis dracunculifolia was evaluated using the model of acute gastric lesions induced by ethanol. The ulcerative lesion index (ULI) was significantly reduced by oral administration of the essential oil of B. dracunculifolia at doses of 50, 250 and 500 mg/kg which reduced the lesions by 42.79, 45.70 and 61.61%, respectively. The analysis of the chemical composition of the essential oil from B. dracunculifolia by GC showed that this was composed mainly of mono- and sesquiterpenes and the majority compound was nerolidol. Therefore, antiulcerogenic activity of nerolidol (50, 250 and 500 mg/kg) was investigated using ethanol-, indomethacin- and stress-induced ulcer models in rat. In the stress-induced ulcer model, a significant reduction of the ULI in animals treated with nerolidol (50, 250 and 500 mg/kg) and cimetidine (100 mg/kg) was observed, compared to the control group (p < 0.05). The percentage of inhibition of ulcer was 41.22, 51.31, 56.57 and 53.50% in groups treated with 50, 250, 500 mg/kg of nerolidol and 100 mg/kg of cimetidine (positive control), respectively. Regarding ethanol- and indomethacin-induced ulcer models, it was observed that the treatment with nerolidol (250 and 500 mg/ kg) significantly reduced the ULI in comparison with the control group (p < 0.05). The dose of 50 mg/kg reduced the parameters analyzed but this was not statistically significant. In the ethanol-induced model percentage of inhibition of ulcer was 34.20, 52.63, 87.63 and 50.87% in groups treated with 50, 250, 500 mg/kg of nerolidol and 30 mg/kg of omeprazol (positive control), respectively. In indomethacin-ulcer the percentage of inhibition of ulcer was 34.69, 40.80, 51.02 and 46.93% in groups treated with 50, 250, 500 mg/kg of nerolidol and 100 mg/ kg of cimetidine (positive control), respectively. The results of this study show that nerolidol displays antiulcer activity, as it significantly inhibited the formation of ulcers induced in different animal models. However, further pharmacological and toxicological investigations, to delineate the mechanism(s) of action and the toxic effects, are required to allow the use of nerolidol for the treatment of gastric ulcer.
Purpose This paper aims to develop an improved and harmonized approach to interdisciplinarity in education for sustainable development (ESD)within higher education institutions (HEIs), focusing on maximizing the mobilization of students from all academic disciplines. An attempt is made to reconcile varying strategies for the implementation of interdisciplinary ESD content in HEIs, studying the relative merit and benefit of those strategies and crafting a new approach to combining them, where possible. Design/methodology/approach This work relies on a robust review and analysis of existing literature proposals on the implementation of ESD in HEIs to elaborate an integrated approach to interdisciplinarity. Specifically, a scoping literature review is applied, analyzing the existing approaches to ESD in HEIs as well as the challenges observed in their implementation. Using this theoretical framework, this paper evaluates the compatibility and efficiency of the approaches currently implemented. Based on this analysis, an integrative approach is outlined, building upon and combining existing proposals. Findings Building on existing literature, this study identifies two main trends for interdisciplinarity in ESD in HEIs: integration into existing disciplinary curricula and new, stand-alone ESD curricula. This paper suggests adopting the two approaches simultaneously, to reach students from all academic disciplines, especially those with minimal exposure to ESD through their own discipline. Furthermore, this paper stresses that these dual curricula strategies should be combined with further interdisciplinary research initiatives as well as extensive leveraging of technology and e-learning. Originality/value This study bridges the gap between diverging visions for ESD in HEIs, harmonizing strategies from the literature to outline a new, multilateral strategy. Furthermore, it extensively studies the need for increased engagement into ESD of students from underrepresented disciplines, including the humanities. This engagement has been little addressed in the literature, rendering the proposed approach original insofar as it outlines the ways to improve current approaches to ESD in HEIs.
Abstract Models of maturity in corporate social responsibility (CSRM) and in sustainable innovation (SIM) allow us to evaluate how a company is evolved in a given area, so that it can trace a strategic path of improvements in the economic, social, and environmental dimensions. This study developed maturity models seeking to verify the influence of CSRM on the SIM and of these dimensions in the business performance (BP). The analysis, grounded on resource‐based theory, used structural equation modeling with a sample of 154 Brazilian companies. It was found that CSRM exerts influence on the SIM and that both positively influence the BP. The use of these models can assist companies in creating value, generating competitive advantage, and promoting superior performance.
The aim of this study was to assess oral health status and its relationship with quality of life. A household population, cross-sectional study was carried out; participants were between 15 and 17 years of age (n = 247) and were examined by two calibrated dentists. Socio-economic status was classified according to ANEP-ABIPEME criteria. Clinical examinations to observe DMFT, CPI and Dean indices were performed as per WHO criteria. The Significant Caries Index (SiC) was used to evaluate polarization of the occurrence of caries among participants of the tercile with higher DMF-T. The OHIP instrument was used to measure quality of life. The Spearman and Mann-Whitney tests were used for assessing correlations (5% significance level). Examinations were carried out in 117 (47.37%) females and in 130 (52.63%) males. Of the examined participants, 45.75% were classified as belonging to socio-economic class C. Caries occurrence was observed in 218 subjects (88.26%); the mean DMFT was 5.40. The SiC index was 9.97. Almost half (47.77%) of the participants examined did not present sextants affected by periodontal disease. Of the participants examined, 80.16% presented absence of fluorosis. The mean OHIP was 3.95. The following correlations were observed: a positive and statistically significant correlation between the highest score in the OHIP and decayed teeth; a positive correlation with threshold significance between OHIP and DMFT; an inverse correlation between intact teeth and OHIP; and a positive and non statistically significant correlation between SiC and OHIP (correlation coefficient = 0.13, p = 0.245). Association between the mean OHIP and the terciles was not significant (p = 0.146); there were also no associations between periodontal condition and OHIP nor were there associations between the presence of fluorosis and mean OHIP.
This systematic review assessed the literature to evaluate the efficiency of polymerization of bulk-fill composite resins at 4 mm restoration depth. PubMed, Cochrane, Scopus and Web of Science databases were searched with no restrictions on year, publication status, or article's language. Selection criteria included studies that evaluated bulk-fill composite resin when inserted in a minimum thickness of 4 mm, followed by curing according to the manufacturers' instructions; presented sound statistical data; and comparison with a control group and/or a reference measurement of quality of polymerization. The evidence level was evaluated by qualitative scoring system and classified as high-, moderate- and low- evidence level. A total of 534 articles were retrieved in the initial search. After the review process, only 10 full-text articles met the inclusion criteria. Most articles included (80%) were classified as high evidence level. Among several techniques, microhardness was the most frequently method performed by the studies included in this systematic review. Irrespective to the "in vitro" method performed, bulk fill RBCs were partially likely to fulfill the important requirement regarding properly curing in 4 mm of cavity depth measured by depth of cure and / or degree of conversion. In general, low viscosities BFCs performed better regarding polymerization efficiency compared to the high viscosities BFCs.
We evaluated the toxicity of hepatic, hematological, and oxidative effects of glyphosate-Roundup(®) on male and female albino Swiss mice. The animals were treated orally with either 50 or 500 mg/kg body weight of the herbicide, on a daily basis for a period of 15 days. Distilled water was used as control treatment. Samples of blood and hepatic tissue were collected at the end of the treatment. Hepatotoxicity was monitored by quantitative analysis of the serum enzymes ALT, AST, and γ-GT and renal toxicity by urea and creatinine. We also investigated liver tissues histopathologically. Alterations of hematological parameters were monitored by RBC, WBC, hemoglobin, hematocrit, MCV, MCH, and MCHC. TBARS (thiobarbituric acid reactive substances) and NPSH (non-protein thiols) were analyzed in the liver to assess oxidative damage. Significant increases in the levels of hepatic enzymes (ALT, AST, and γ-GT) were observed for both herbicide treatments, but no considerable differences were found by histological analysis. The hematological parameters showed significant alterations (500 mg/kg body weight) with reductions of RBC, hematocrit, and hemoglobin, together with a significant increase of MCV, in both sexes of mice. In males, there was an important increase in lipid peroxidation at both dosage levels, together with an NPSH decrease in the hepatic tissue, whereas in females significant changes in these parameters were observed only at the higher dose rate. The results of this study indicate that glyphosate-Roundup(®) can promote hematological and hepatic alterations, even at subacute exposure, which could be related to the induction of reactive oxygen species.
This study compared the effects of moisture and rubbing action on the immediate and one-year microtensile bond strength (BS) of an ethanol/water-based adhesive system (Single Bond [SB]) and an acetone-based system (One Step [OS]) to dentin. A flat superficial dentin surface on 60 human molars was exposed by wet abrasion. Two coats of the adhesives were applied on either a dry (D) or rewetted surface (W) with no (NRA), slight (SRA) or vigorous rubbing action (VRA). After light curing (600 mW/cm2/10 seconds), composite buildups were constructed incrementally and the specimens were stored in water (37 degrees C/24 hours). They were longitudinally sectioned in the "x" and "y" directions to obtain bonded sticks (0.8 mm2) to be tested in tension at 0.5 mm/minute. The sticks from each tooth were then divided, stored in water at 37 degrees C and tested immediately and after 12 months (12 M) at 0.5 mm/minute. The bond strength values of sticks from the same hemitooth were averaged for statistical purposes. The prematurely debonded specimens were included in the hemi-tooth mean. The data from each adhesive was analyzed by three-way ANOVA and Tukey's multiple comparison tests (alpha = 0.05). In the dry groups, high bond strength values were obtained under VRA. When the dentin was kept moist, both SRA and VRA provided high resin-dentin bond strength values. Reductions in bond strength values after one year of water storage were not observed for the SB adhesive or were less pronounced for the OS adhesive when it was vigorously rubbed onto the dentin surface.
Purpose The competitive model has changed. In this context, society entered into an era in which intangible assets are the greatest assets of a company. However, some gaps and uncertainties are presented in the literature as to understand the value of a company based on knowledge intensive activities. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the methods of evaluation of intangible assets in the context of business, economic and strategic management. Design/methodology/approach This is a qualitative research. This research is characterized as descriptive, bibliographic, inductive. Findings The main results of this research can highlight the existence of valuation methods of intangible assets intended for specific industries, as public and/or private, that can be better aligned to the context of business; economic and/or strategic management. Originality/value It was found that intangible assets are a current topic and increasingly addressed in the literature.
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyze circular business models of Brazilian companies. Design/methodology/approach The authors analyzed 105 business models of adopting companies from the perspective of the circularity of resources. These were classified as analytical sector category, business model design aligned with sustainability, sustainable practices adopted, level of maturity of business models and determinants of the circularity of resources. Findings The results show that companies belonging to the service sector predominate, which, above all, offer the virtualization of processes, sharing, ecological products, socially responsible and emphasis on recycling. Of these, 92.38 percent were already aligned with the sustainability assumptions, which contribute decisively to the operationalization in a circular perspective. Therefore, the materialization of the circular economy (CE) in Brazil is occurring, although there is potential for a stronger engagement with the determinants of the CE, especially in the perspective of the biological cycle and in the short cycles of technical levels. Originality/value In addition, the authors promote advances in the maturity levels of business models to optimize the optimal level, where processes are predictable, critically analyzed and continuously improved.
PURPOSE: The aim of this double-blind randomized study was to compare the clinical performance of a resin-modified glass ionomer (Vitremer, 3M) and a polyacid-modified resin (Dyract, Dentsply DeTrey) in noncarious Class V restorations after 5 years. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twelve patients, having at least one pair of equal-sized noncarious cervical lesions under occlusion and a mean age of 40 years (range 19 to 63 years; median 41), were enrolled in this study. A total of 32 restorations (16 with each material) were placed according to the manufacturers' instructions by two calibrated operators. Two other independent examiners evaluated the restorations at baseline and after 5 years according to the USPHS criteria. The assessment criteria were: retention, anatomical form, marginal adaptation and marginal discoloration, color match, surface texture, and secondary caries. Statistical analysis was conducted using Fisher's exact test (alpha = 0.05). RESULTS: No secondary caries was detected with either material. The retention rate for Vitremer (93%) and for Dyract (78.5%) did not differ significantly (p > 0.05). Regarding anatomical form, only two restorations of each material were recorded as bravo. In terms of marginal adaptation, 38.5% of Dyract restorations were rated alpha and 61.5% bravo, while 84.6% of Vitremer restorations were rated alpha and only 15.4% bravo (p < 0.05). For marginal discoloration, 18.2% of Dyract restorations and 84.6% of Vitremer restorations were rated alpha, with the remaining rated bravo. 86% of Vitremer restorations were rated as bravo and 23% alpha for both surface texture and color match. All Dyract restorations were classified as alpha regarding surface texture, and only two Dyract restorations (18.2%) were classified as bravo in the color match item. CONCLUSION: The marginal adaptation of the RMGIC (Vitremer) was significantly better, the marginal discoloration lower, and the retention rate higher (though not significantly) than that of the PMRC (Dyract) after 5 years in situ. Dyract performed better in terms of surface texture and color match in noncarious Class V restorations after 5 years.
Computer-mediated communication is the foundation of networking and electronic communities. As the use of new communication technologies continues to proliferate throughout organizations, new modes of interaction between individuals and groups emerge, presenting alternative media choices. How individuals choose between these modes has stimulated much research into theoretical perspectives of media choice within networked and electronic communities. Media Richness Theory is one of these theoretical perspectives. The research presented in this paper investigates the underlying factors of Media Richness Theory, task equivocality and media richness. The results obtained provide evidence to suggest that equivocality may not be unidimensional, and that the richness of media is perceived multidimensionally in terms of the information carrying capacity of media. The findings on dimensionality of equivocality raise doubts as to the basic assumptions of this concept and media richness theory.
The current study evaluated the effect of 2% chlorhexidine digluconate (CHX) on the immediate and six-month resin-dentin bond strength (BS) and nanoleakage pattern (NL) of etch-and-rinse adhesives when applied in aqueous or associated to the phosphoric acid conditioner. The occlusal enamel of 42 caries-free extracted molars was removed in order to expose a flat dentin surface. In groups 1 and 2 (control-C), the surfaces were acid etched with conventional phosphoric acid, and the adhesives Prime&Bond NT (PB) and Adper Single Bond 2 (SB) were applied after rinsing, drying and rewetting with water. In groups 3 and 4 (Ac/CHX), the adhesives were applied in a similar manner, however, a 2% CHX-containing acid was previously applied. In groups 5 and 6 (CHX), the adhesives were applied according to the control group; however, the rewetting procedure was performed with an aqueous solution of 2% CHX for 60 seconds. Composite buildups (Opallis, FGM) were constructed incrementally, and the specimens were longitudinally sectioned in the "x" and "y" directions to obtain bonded sticks (0.8 mm2) to be tested in tension at 0.5 mm/minute immediately or after six months of water storage. For NL, two bonded sticks from each tooth were coated with nail varnish, placed in silver nitrate and polished down with SiC paper. Resin-dentin interfaces were analyzed by EDX-SEM. The BS and NL data from each adhesive was submitted to two-way repeated measures ANOVA and Tukey's test (alpha=0.05). After six months of water storage, significant reductions in BS were observed for both adhesives in the control group (p<0.05). When Ac/CHX or CHX was used, no significant reductions in BS were observed for both systems. Nanoleakage was more evident in the control group than in the experimental groups (p<0.05), even after six months. The use of CHX in an aqueous solution or associated with the acid conditioner was effective for reducing degradation of resin-dentin bonds after six months of water storage.
