The African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analysis (AMMA) is a major international campaign investigating far‐reaching aspects of the African monsoon, climate and the hydrological cycle. A special observing period was established for the dry season (SOP0) with a focus on aerosol and radiation measurements. SOP0 took place during January and February 2006 and involved several ground‐based measurement sites across west Africa. These were augmented by aircraft measurements made by the Facility for Airborne Atmospheric Measurements (FAAM) aircraft during the Dust and Biomass‐burning Experiment (DABEX), measurements from an ultralight aircraft, and dedicated modeling efforts. We provide an overview of these measurement and modeling studies together with an analysis of the meteorological conditions that determined the aerosol transport and link the results together to provide a balanced synthesis. The biomass burning aerosol was significantly more absorbing than that measured in other areas and, unlike industrial areas, the ratio of excess carbon monoxide to organic carbon was invariant, which may be owing to interaction between the organic carbon and mineral dust aerosol. The mineral dust aerosol in situ filter measurements close to Niamey reveals very little absorption, while other measurements and remote sensing inversions suggest significantly more absorption. The influence of both mineral dust and biomass burning aerosol on the radiation budget is significant throughout the period, implying that meteorological models should include their radiative effects for accurate weather forecasts and climate simulations. Generally, the operational meteorological models that simulate the production and transport of mineral dust show skill at lead times of 5 days or more. Climate models that need to accurately simulate the vertical profiles of both anthropogenic and natural aerosols to accurately represent the direct and indirect effects of aerosols appear to do a reasonable job, although the magnitude of the aerosol scattering is strongly dependent upon the emission data set.
A randomized, prospective, double-blind, placebo-controlled study was conducted at 7 clinical centers on 148 patients. Patients received orally either 100 mg. pentosanpolysulfate (a synthetic polysaccharide) 3 times per day or a placebo. Of the patients on drug therapy 32% showed significant improvement compared to 16% of those on placebo (p = 0.01). This study provides a model to assess this disease quantitatively in a prospective manner using a method whereby the patients globally assess their symptoms as either worse or improved by 0, 25, 50, 75 or 100%. Patients on drug therapy also experienced a significant decrease in pain and urgency (p = 0.04 and 0.01) on analogue scales when compared to placebo and also more drug patients showed an average increase of more than 20 ml. in voided volume than did placebo patients (p = 0.02). All adverse effects were minor, with 7 in the drug group and 10 in the placebo group. The results support the concept that some patients with the interstitial cystitis syndrome may have abnormal bladder surface glycosaminoglycans.
Osteointegration is dependent on a variety of biomechanical and biochemical factors. One factor is the wettability of an implant surface that is directly influenced by its surface energy. This investigation used the Zisman plot to determine critical surface tension as one representative measurement of surface energy. The effects of surface treatment, bulk grain size, and surface roughness on the critical surface tension of unalloyed titanium (Ti) were examined. Radio frequency glow discharge-treated Ti had the highest critical surface tension, followed by the passivated and heat-sterilized conditions. Titanium with no surface treatment had the lowest critical surface tension. The surface energy of Ti with an average grain size of 23 microns was not significantly different from that with a grain size of 70 microns. Surface roughness was shown to cause significant difference in measurements and definitely should be considered in studies of this kind.
This article represents the sixth annual review of the current state of pediatric transplantation in the United States from the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (SRTR). It presents updated trends, discussion of analyses presented during the year by the SRTR to the committees of the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN) and discussion of important issues currently facing pediatric organ transplantation. Unless otherwise stated, the statistics in this article are drawn from the reference tables of the 2007 OPTN/SRTR Annual Report. In this article, pediatric patients are defined as candidates, recipients or donors aged 17 years or less. Data for both graft and patient survival are reported as unadjusted survival, unless otherwise stated (adjusted patient and graft survival are available in the reference tables). Short-term survival (3 month and 1 year) reflects outcomes for transplants performed in 2004 and 2005; 3-year survival reflects transplants from 2002 to 2005; and 5-year survival reports on transplants performed from 2000 to 2005. Details on the methods of analysis employed may be found in the reference tables themselves or in the technical notes of the 2007 OTPN/SRTR Annual Report, both available online at http://www.ustransplant.org.
This study examined the dynamics of popularity in adolescent friendship networks across 3 years in middle school. Longitudinal social network modeling was used to identify selection and influence in the similarity of popularity among friends. It was argued that lower status adolescents strive to enhance their status through befriending higher status adolescents, whereas higher status adolescents strive to maintain their status by keeping lower status adolescents at a distance. The results largely supported these expectations. Selection partially accounted for similarity in popularity among friends; adolescents preferred to affiliate with similar-status or higher status peers, reinforcing the attractiveness of popular adolescents and explaining stability of popularity at the individual level. Influence processes also accounted for similarity in popularity over time, showing that peers increase in popularity and become more similar to their friends. The results showed how selection and influence processes account for popularity dynamics in adolescent networks over time.
Abstract. It has long been speculated that Physa acuta , a pulmonate snail widespread and invasive in fresh waters of the old world, may have originated in North America. But the identification of a new‐world cognate has been complicated by the confused systematics and taxonomy of the Physidae in America. More than 40 species of physids are currently recognized in the United States, many with variable and overlapping morphology. We have previously established that premating reproductive isolation is negligible among physid snails. Here we report the results from no‐choice crosses each involving 2 populations of the widespread American species Physa heterostropha and Physa integra , both with each other and with P. acuta , designed to compare measures of reproductive success between species and between populations within species. Samples of P. acuta were collected from France and Ireland, P. heterostropha from eastern Pennsylvania and South Carolina, and P. integra from southern Indiana and northern Michigan. The 6 intrapopulation controls varied quite significantly in their survival, age at first reproduction, parental fecundity, F 1 viability, and F 1 fertility under our culture conditions. Measures of survival and reproduction in the 6 interpopulation crosses were generally intermediate, but in no case significantly worse than the more poorly performing control. Thus we were unable to detect evidence of reproductive isolation among our 6 populations of snails from 2 continents. All should be referred to the oldest available nomen, P. acuta .
Molluscs in general, and bivalves in particular, exhibit an extraordinary degree of mitochondrial gene order variation when compared with other metazoans. Two factors inhibiting our understanding the evolution of gene rearrangement in bivalves are inadequate taxonomic sampling and failure to examine gene order in a phylogenetic framework. Here, we report the first complete nucleotide sequence (16,060 bp) of the mitochondrial (mt) genome of a North American freshwater bivalve, Lampsilis ornata (Mollusca: Paleoheterodonta: Unionidae). Gene order and mt genome content is examined in a comparative phylogenetic framework for Lampsilis and five other bivalves, representing five families. Mitochondrial genome content is shown to vary by gene duplication and loss among taxa and between male and female mitotypes within a species. Although mt gene arrangement is highly variable among bivalves, when optimized on an independently derived phylogenetic hypothesis, it allows for the reconstruction of ancestral gene order states and indicates the potential phylogenetic utility of the data. However, the interpretation of reconstructed ancestral gene order states must take in to account both the accuracy of the phylogenetic estimation and the probability of character state change across the topology, such as the presence/absence of atp8 in bivalve lineages. We discuss what role, if any, doubly uniparental inheritance (DUI) and recombination between sexual mitotypes may play in influencing gene rearrangement of the mt genome in some bivalve lineages.

The family Physidae (Pulmonata: Basommatophora) is a group of freshwater hermaphroditic snails that have a Holarctic distribution with extension into Central and South America. Despite considerable literature justifying various taxonomic schemes and groupings, no classification has been proposed using modern phylogenetic methods. In an effort to expand what is known concerning the evolutionary relationships of Physidae, we examined a portion of the mitochondrial 16S rRNA and cytochrome c oxidase subunit I genes among 66 specimens representing 28 taxa. The molecular phylogeny based on mitochondrial sequences supports the monophyly of the family Physidae. Six major clades were uncovered in the analysis, corresponding to differences in penial morphology. These six groups include the following recommended phylogenetic species and species groups: Aplexa elongata (Say), Aplexa 1 group; Physa marmorata Guilding, Aplexa 3 group; P. fontinalis (Linneaus), P.
A within-subjects, across-tasks, multiple-baseline design was used to evaluate the effects of a cognitive cover, copy, and compare (C-CCC) intervention on the division fact performance of three elementary students in a self-contained classroom for students with behavioral disorders. Students were trained to look at a division problem and answer, cover the problem and answer, say the problem and answer to themselves (subvocally), uncover the problem and answer, and evaluate their subvocalizations from memory. If students made an error, they were instructed to repeat the procedure with that item, until correct, before proceeding to the next item. The data showed that two of the three students increased their rate of correct responding to mastery level following the C-CCC intervention. The third student required feedback and goal setting to reach mastery level. Assessment data, collected 8 months following the intervention phase, showed that all three students maintained increased rates of correct responding to division facts.

Disseminated herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection may lead to acute liver failure (ALF) and the need for emergency liver transplantation (LT). The primary aim of this study was to determine the utility of HSV serological testing and HSV DNA testing by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in the diagnosis and management of indeterminate, pregnancy-related, and known HSV-related ALF. Stored sera obtained on study day 1 or 2 from patients enrolled in the United States ALF Study Group with indeterminate (n = 51), pregnancy-related (n = 12), and HSV-related (n = 4) ALF were screened for HSV DNA by PCR and serology. While 7 of the indeterminate and pregnant patients had positive anti-HSV immunoglobulin M, none had detectable HSV DNA. The 4 known HSV cases all had high-titer HSV DNA on presentation (range: 3.5 to 36 x 10(8) copies/mL). Two HSV patients underwent LT but developed posttransplant extrahepatic HSV infection despite suppression of HSV DNA with acyclovir treatment, and one of them eventually died. The 2 other fulminant HSV patients died within 48 hours of presentation. In conclusion, serum HSV DNA indicative of occult HSV infection was not detected in 51 indeterminate and 12 pregnancy-related ALF patients. The 4 patients with known HSV-related ALF all had high HSV DNA levels at presentation, and despite the rapid use of antiviral therapy and emergency LT, substantial morbidity and mortality were encountered, highlighting the poor prognosis with severe disseminated HSV infection.
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to quantify the female athlete composition of the research data informing the most influential consensus and position statements in treating sports-related concussions. DESIGN: We identified the most influential concussion consensus and position statements through citation and documented clinician use; then, we analysed the percentage of male and female athletes from each statement's cited research. DATA SOURCES: We searched PubMed on 26 August 2021 with no date restrictions for English language studies using the terms 'concussion position statement' and 'concussion consensus statement.' ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR SELECTING STUDIES: Based on each statement having multiple statement editions, documented clinician use, and substantial citation advantages, we selected the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA, 2014), International Conference on Concussion in Sport (ICCS, 2017) and the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM, 2019). We extracted all cited studies from all three papers for assessment. For each paper analysing human data, at least two authors independently recorded female athlete participant data. RESULTS: A total of 171 distinct studies with human participants were cited by these three consensus and position papers and included in the female athlete analyses (93 NATA; 13 ICCS; 65 AMSSM). All three statements documented a significant under-representation of female athletes in their cited literature, relying on samples that were overall 80.1% male (NATA: 79.9%, ICCS: 87.8 %, AMSSM: 79.4%). Moreover, 40.4% of these studies include no female participants at all. CONCLUSION: Female athletes are significantly under-represented in the studies guiding clinical care for sport-related concussion for a broad array of sports and exercise medicine clinicians. We recommend intentional recruitment and funding of gender diverse participants in concussion studies, suggest authorship teams reflect diverse perspectives, and encourage consensus statements note when cited data under-represent non-male athletes.
North America exhibits the most diverse freshwater fish fauna among temperate regions of the world. Species diversity is concentrated in the Central Highlands, drained by the Mississippi, Gulf Slope and Atlantic Slope river systems. Previous investigations of Central Highlands biogeography have led to conflicting hypotheses involving dispersal and vicariance to explain the diversity and distribution of the freshwater fish fauna. In this investigation predictions of the Central Highlands pre-Pleistocene vicariance hypothesis are tested with a phylogeographic analysis of the percid species Percina evides, which is widely distributed in several disjunct areas of the Central Highlands. Phylogenetic analysis of complete gene sequences of mitochondrially encoded cytochrome b recover three phylogroups, with very low levels of sequence polymorphism within groups. The two western phylogroups are monophyletic with respect to the eastern phylogroup. The recovery of two monophyletic lineages with an eastern and western distribution in the disjunct highland areas is a pattern expected from vicariance, but is not predicted by the Central Highlands pre-Pleistocene vicariance hypothesis. The recovery of very limited mitochondrial DNA polymorphism and lack of phylogeographic structuring across the entire range of the eastern clade, very shallow polymorphism between the disjunct Missouri River and upper Mississippi River populations, and lack of sequence polymorphism in the upper Mississippi River populations, support a hypothesis of dispersal during or following the Pleistocene. The present distribution of P. evides is best explained by both vicariant and dispersal events.
In the carnivorous plant family Lentibulariaceae, the bladderwort lineage (Utricularia and Genlisea) is substantially more species-rich and morphologically divergent than its sister lineage, the butterworts (Pinguicula). Bladderworts have a relaxed body plan that has permitted the evolution of terrestrial, epiphytic, and aquatic forms that capture prey in intricately designed suction bladders or corkscrew-shaped lobster-pot traps. In contrast, the flypaper-trapping butterworts maintain vegetative structures typical of angiosperms. We found that bladderwort genomes evolve significantly faster across seven loci (the trnL intron, the second trnL exon, the trnL-F intergenic spacer, the rps16 intron, rbcL, coxI, and 5.8S rDNA) representing all three genomic compartments. Generation time differences did not show a significant association. We relate these findings to the contested speciation rate hypothesis, which postulates a relationship between increased nucleotide substitution and increased cladogenesis. Surgical implant finishing and sterilization procedures were investigated to determine surface characteristics of unalloyed titanium (Ti). All specimens initially were cleaned with phosphoric acid and divided into five groups for comparisons of different surface treatments (C = cleaned as above, no further treatment; CP = C and passivated in nitric acid; CPS = CP and dry-heat sterilized; CPSS = CPS and resterilized; CS = C and dry-heat sterilized). Auger (AES), X-ray photoelectron (XPS), and Raman spectroscopic methods were used to examine surface compositions. The surface oxides formed by all treatments primarily were TiO2, with some Ti2O3 and possibly TiO. Significant concentrations of carbonaceous substances also were observed. The cleaning procedure alone resulted in residual phosphorus, primarily as phosphate groups along with some hydrogen phosphates. A higher percentage of physisorbed water appeared to be associated with the phosphorus. Passivation (with HNO3) alone removed phosphorus from the surface; specimens sterilized without prior passivation showed the thickest oxide and phosphorus profiles, suggesting that passivation alters the oxide characteristics either directly by altering the oxide structure or indirectly by removing moieties that alter the oxide. Raman spectroscopy showed no crystalline order in the oxide. Carbon, oxygen, phosphorus, and nitrogen presence were found to correlate with previously determined surface energy.
Several species of freshwater unionid mussels in the genus Lampsilis exhibit a remarkable reproductive strategy. Female mussels of these species enclose their larvae in a minnow-like lure, called a 'superconglutinate', to attract piscivorous fishes. When a fish attempts to ingest the superconglutinate the lure ruptures and the larvae are released to parasitize the fish. Of the four species of mussel which exhibit this strategy and are endemic to the Gulf Coast drainages of the southeastern United States, three are protected under the Endangered Species Act, and one is recognized as imperiled. Phylogenetic analysis of nucleotide sequences of the mitochondrial 16S ribosomal RNA and the first subunit of the cytochrome oxidase c genes was conducted on 18 individual specimens representing these four species and six outgroup taxa. Phylogenetic analyses of these data support the monophyly of the superconglutinate-producing mussels, and indicates a strong geographical component to the data. The zoogeographic patterns of the four taxa included in the study are congruent with those seen in freshwater vertebrates, and are consistent with a vicariant pattern resulting from fluctuations in sea level during the Pleistocene. Despite the strong geographical structuring of the data, only one species, Lampsilis subangulata, was recovered as monophyletic. The authors attribute the lack of support for the monophyly of the remaining species to insufficient sequence variation and the recent origin of the ancestor of these taxa. Based on these data, any future captive breeding projects aimed at augmenting or re-establishing populations should do so only from the appropriate source populations so as to maintain the genetic integrity of these nascent species.
Abstract Skin cancer is one of the most frequently occurring cancers worldwide, and early detection is crucial for effective treatment. Dermatologists often face challenges such as heavy data demands, potential human errors, and strict time limits, which can negatively affect diagnostic outcomes. Deep learning–based diagnostic systems offer quick, accurate testing and enhanced research capabilities, providing significant support to dermatologists. In this study, we enhanced the Swin Transformer architecture by implementing the hybrid shifted window-based multi-head self-attention (HSW-MSA) in place of the conventional shifted window-based multi-head self-attention (SW-MSA). This adjustment enables the model to more efficiently process areas of skin cancer overlap, capture finer details, and manage long-range dependencies, while maintaining memory usage and computational efficiency during training. Additionally, the study replaces the standard multi-layer perceptron (MLP) in the Swin Transformer with a SwiGLU-based MLP, an upgraded version of the gated linear unit (GLU) module, to achieve higher accuracy, faster training speeds, and better parameter efficiency. The modified Swin model-base was evaluated using the publicly accessible ISIC 2019 skin dataset with eight classes and was compared against popular convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and cutting-edge vision transformer (ViT) models. In an exhaustive assessment on the unseen test dataset, the proposed Swin-Base model demonstrated exceptional performance, achieving an accuracy of 89.36%, a recall of 85.13%, a precision of 88.22%, and an F1-score of 86.65%, surpassing all previously reported research and deep learning models documented in the literature.
Hydrothermal spring systems may well have been present on early Mars and could have served as a habitat for primitive life. The integrated instrument suite of the Athena Rover has, as a component on the robotic arm, a Mossbauer spectrometer. In the context of future Mars exploration we present results of Mossbauer analysis of a suite of samples from an iron-rich thermal spring in the Chocolate Pots area of Yellowstone National Park (YNP) and from Obsidian Pool (YNP) and Manitou Springs, Colorado. We have found that Mossbauer spectroscopy can discriminate among the iron-bearing minerals in our samples. Those near the vent and on the surface are identified as ferrihydrite, an amorphous ferric mineraloid. Subsurface samples, collected from cores, which are likely to have undergone inorganic and/or biologically mediated alteration (diagenesis), exhibit spectral signatures that include nontronite (a smectite clay), hematite (alpha-Fe2O3), small-particle/nanophase goethite (alpha-FeOOH), and siderite (FeCO3). We find for iron minerals that Mossbauer spectroscopy is at least as efficient in identification as X-ray diffraction. This observation is important from an exploration standpoint. As a planetary surface instrument, Mossbauer spectroscopy can yield high-quality spectral data without sample preparation (backscatter mode). We have also used field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), in conjunction with energy-dispersive X ray (EDX) fluorescence spectroscopy, to characterize the microbiological component of surface sinters and the relation between the microbiological and the mineralogical framework. Evidence is presented that the minerals found in these deposits can have multi-billion-year residence times and thus may have survived their possible production in a putative early Martian hot spring up to the present day. Examples include the nanophase property and the Mossbauer signature for siderite, which has been identified in a 2.09-billion-year old hematite-rich chert stromatolite. Our research demonstrates that in situ Mossbauer spectroscopy can help determine whether hydrothermal mineral deposits exist on Mars, which is significant for exobiology because of the issue of whether that world ever had conditions conductive to the origin of life. As a useful tool for selection of samples suitable for transport to Earth, Mossbauer spectroscopy will not only serve geological interests but will also have potential for exopaleontology.
PURPOSE: To determine reliability, diagnostic values, and minimal detectable change scores, 90% confidence (MDC90) of pediatric clinical tests of vestibular function. METHODS: Twenty children with severe to profound bilateral sensorineural hearing loss and 23 children with typical development, aged 6 to 12 years, participated. The Head Thrust Test, Emory Clinical Vestibular Chair Test, Bucket Test, Dynamic Visual Acuity, Modified Clinical Test of Sensory Interaction on Balance, and Sensory Organization Test were completed twice for reliability. Reference standard diagnostic tests were rotary chair and vestibular evoked myogenic potential. Reliability, sensitivity, specificity, predictive values, likelihood ratios, and MDC90 scores were calculated. RESULTS: Reliability ranged from an intraclass correlation coefficient of 0.73 to 0.95. Sensitivity, specificity, and predictive values, using cutoff scores for each test representing the largest area under the curve, ranged from 63% to 100%. The MDC90 for Dynamic Visual Acuity and Modified Clinical Test of Sensory Interaction on Balance were 8 optotypes and 16.75 seconds, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Clinical tests can be used accurately to identify children with vestibular hypofunction.
