A novel energy management system (EMS) based on a rolling horizon (RH) strategy for a renewable-based microgrid is proposed. For each decision step, a mixed integer optimization problem based on forecasting models is solved. The EMS provides online set points for each generation unit and signals for consumers based on a demand-side management (DSM) mechanism. The proposed EMS is implemented for a microgrid composed of photovoltaic panels, two wind turbines, a diesel generator and an energy storage system. A coherent forecast information scheme and an economic comparison framework between the RH and the standard unit commitment (UC) are proposed. Solar and wind energy forecasting are based on phenomenological models with updated data. A neural network for two-day-ahead electric consumption forecasting is also designed. The system is tested using real data sets from an existent microgrid in Chile (ESUSCON). The results based on different operation conditions show the economic sense of the proposal. A full practical implementation of the system for ESUSCON is envisioned.
<para xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"> This paper describes a comparative study allowing the selection of the most appropriate electric-propulsion system for a parallel hybrid electric vehicle (HEV). This paper is based on an exhaustive review of the state of the art and on an effective comparison of the performances of the four main electric-propulsion systems, namely the dc motor, the induction motor (IM), the permanent magnet synchronous motor, and the switched reluctance motor. The main conclusion drawn by the proposed comparative study is that it is the cage IM that better fulfills the major requirements of the HEV electric propulsion. </para>

This paper investigates the use of fuzzy logic for fault detection and diagnosis in a pulsewidth modulation voltage source inverter (PWM-VSI) induction motor drive. The proposed fuzzy technique requires the measurement of the output inverter currents to detect intermittent loss of firing pulses in the inverter power switches. For diagnosis purposes, a localization domain made with seven patterns is built with the stator Concordia current vector. One is dedicated to the healthy domain and the six others to each inverter power switch. The fuzzy bases of the proposed technique are extracted from the current analysis of the fault modes in the PWM-VSI. Experimental results on a 1.5-kW induction motor drive are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed fuzzy approach.
The control of magnetic order in nanoscale devices underpins many proposals for integrating spintronics concepts into conventional electronics. A key challenge lies in finding an energy-efficient means of control, as power dissipation remains an important factor limiting future miniaturization of integrated circuits. One promising approach involves magnetoelectric coupling in magnetostrictive/piezoelectric systems, where induced strains can bear directly on the magnetic anisotropy. While such processes have been demonstrated in several multiferroic heterostructures, the incorporation of such complex materials into practical geometries has been lacking. Here we demonstrate the possibility of generating sizeable anisotropy changes, through induced strains driven by applied electric fields, in hybrid piezoelectric/spin-valve nanowires. By combining magneto-optical Kerr effect and magnetoresistance measurements, we show that domain wall propagation fields can be doubled under locally applied strains. These results highlight the prospect of constructing low-power domain wall gates for magnetic logic devices. The use of electric fields to control the magnetization of ferromagnetic materials could enable more efficient electronics. Lei et al.show that by applying lateral strain to a magnetostrictive nanowire with a piezoelectric, voltage-controlled gating of magnetic domain wall motion in the wire can be achieved.
Packing contacts are crystal artifacts, yet they make use of the same forces that govern specific recognition in protein-protein complexes and oligomeric proteins. They provide examples of a nonspecific protein-protein interaction which can be compared to biologically relevant ones. We evaluate the number and size of pairwise interfaces in 152 crystal forms where the asymmetric unit contains a monomeric protein. In those crystal forms that have no element of 2-fold symmetry, we find that molecules form 8 to 10 pairwise interfaces. The total area of the surface buried on each molecule is large, up to 4400 A2. Pairwise interfaces bury 200-1200 A2, like interfaces generated at random in a computer simulation, and less than interfaces in protease-inhibitor or antigen-antibody complexes, which bury 1500 A2 or more. Thus, specific contacts occurring in such complexes extend over a larger surface than nonspecific ones. In crystal forms with 2-fold symmetry, pairwise interfaces are fewer and larger on average than in the absence of 2-fold symmetry. Some bury 1500-2500 A2, like interfaces in oligomeric proteins, and create "crystal oligomers" which may have formed in the solution before crystallizing.
When charging or discharging electric vehicles, power losses occur in the vehicle and the building systems supplying the vehicle. A new use case for electric vehicles, grid services, has recently begun commercial operation. Vehicles capable of such application, called Grid-Integrated Vehicles, may have use cases with charging and discharging summing up to much more energy transfer than the charging only use case, so measuring and reducing electrical losses is even more important. In this study, the authors experimentally measure and analyze the power losses of a Grid-Integrated Vehicle system, via detailed measurement of the building circuits, power feed components, and of sample electric vehicle components. Under the conditions studied, measured total one-way losses vary from 12% to 36%, so understanding loss factors is important to efficient design and use. Predominant losses occur in the power electronics used for AC-DC conversion. The electronics efficiency is lowest at low power transfer and low state-of-charge, and is lower during discharging than charging. Based on these findings, two engineering design approaches are proposed. First, optimal sizing of charging stations is analyzed. Second, a dispatch algorithm for grid services operating at highest efficiency is developed, showing 7.0% to 9.7% less losses than the simple equal dispatch algorithm.
The electrical properties of silicon nitride/amorphous silicon structures were investigated using thin film transistors (TFTs) and metal insulator semiconductor (MIS) devices employing either a top nitride (TN) or bottom nitride (BN) as gate insulator. The density of states (DOS) deduced from the subthreshold transfer characteristic of the TFTs is one to two orders of magnitude higher than that obtained from quasistatic C(V) measurements on the MIS structures. This difference is discussed by considering the different thickness of the a‐Si:H layers of the two devices and the role of a fixed charge at the rear interface. Both techniques indicate a DOS in BN devices which is only slightly lower than in TN devices, by less than a factor of two. The measured field effect mobility of BN TFTs is about 70% higher. The differences in the measured field effect mobility for TN and BN configuration are discussed and ascribed to the source and drain parasitic resistances. The conclusion is verified by the fabrication of a TN TFT with a pure phosphine rear surface treatment, which exhibits performance comparable to BN TFTs.
This article presents a novel design of portable planar microwave sensor for fast, accurate, and non-invasive monitoring of the blood glucose level as an effective technique for diabetes control and prevention. The proposed sensor design incorporates four cells of hexagonal-shaped complementary split ring resonators (CSRRs), arranged in a honey-cell configuration, and fabricated on a thin sheet of an FR4 dielectric substrate.The CSRR sensing elements are coupled via a planar microstrip-line to a radar board operating in the ISM band 2.4-2.5 GHz. The integrated sensor shows an impressive detection capability and a remarkable sensitivity of blood glucose levels (BGLs). The superior detection capability is attributed to the enhanced design of the CSRR sensing elements that expose the glucose samples to an intense interaction with the electromagnetic fields highly concentrated around the sensing region at the induced resonances. This feature enables the developed sensor to detect extremely delicate variations in the electromagnetic properties that characterize the varying-level glucose samples. The desired performance of the fabricated sensor is practically validated through in-vitro measurements using a convenient setup of Vector Network Analyzer (VNA) that records notable traces of frequency-shift responses when the sensor is loaded with samples of 70-120 mg/dL glucose concentrations. This is also demonstrated in the radar-driven prototype where the raw data collected at the radar receiving channel shows obvious patterns that reflect glucose-level variations. Furthermore, the differences in the sensor responses for tested glucose samples are quantified by applying the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) machine learning algorithm. The proposed sensor, beside its impressive detection capability of the diabetes-spectrum glucose levels, has several other favorable attributes including compact size, simple fabrication, affordable cost, non-ionizing nature, and minimum health risk or impact. Such attractive features promote the proposed sensor as a possible candidate for non-invasive glucose levels monitoring for diabetes as evidenced by the preliminary results from a proof-of-concept in-vivo experiment of tracking an individual's BGL by placing his fingertip onto the sensor. The presented system is a developmental platform towards radar-driven wearable continuous BGL monitors.
The two governing equations that describe the diffusion of chloride ions into nonsaturated concrete are established. Material models for the four material parameters involved in the governing equations are developed, including chloride binding capacity, chloride diffusion coefficient, moisture capacity, and moisture diffusion coefficient. The planned attempt is to establish material models based on analytical results first, and if this is not possible, to develop empirical models based on dominant physical or chemical mechanism(s) at different scale levels and calibrate the individual model by related test data. The alternating-direction implicit (ADI) finite-difference method was employed for solving coupled two-dimensional moisture diffusion and chloride penetration equations. The numerical solutions are compared with the experimental results obtained by the 90-day ponding test (AASHTO T259-80). The numerical prediction agrees very well with the test data. Free chloride concentration profiles at different depths and different ages of concrete slab are presented. Two limiting cases for different initial relative humidity levels are analyzed in detail to study the dependence of the chloride diffusion on the moisture diffusion in nonsaturated concrete.
In this study, we used deletions at 22q13, which represent a substantial source of human pathology (Phelan/McDermid syndrome), as a model for investigating the molecular mechanisms of terminal deletions that are currently poorly understood. We characterized at the molecular level the genomic rearrangement in 44 unrelated patients with 22q13 monosomy resulting from simple terminal deletions (72%), ring chromosomes (14%), and unbalanced translocations (7%). We also discovered interstitial deletions between 17-74 kb in 9% of the patients. Haploinsufficiency of the SHANK3 gene, confirmed in all rearrangements, is very likely the cause of the major neurological features associated with PMS. SHANK3 mutations can also result in language and/or social interaction disabilities. We determined the breakpoint junctions in 29 cases, providing a realistic snapshot of the variety of mechanisms driving non-recurrent deletion and repair at chromosome ends. De novo telomere synthesis and telomere capture are used to repair terminal deletions; non-homologous end-joining or microhomology-mediated break-induced replication is probably involved in ring 22 formation and translocations; non-homologous end-joining and fork stalling and template switching prevail in cases with interstitial 22q13.3. For the first time, we also demonstrated that distinct stabilizing events of the same terminal deletion can occur in different early embryonic cells, proving that terminal deletions can be repaired by multistep healing events and supporting the recent hypothesis that rare pathogenic germline rearrangements may have mitotic origin. Finally, the progressive clinical deterioration observed throughout the longitudinal medical history of three subjects over forty years supports the hypothesis of a role for SHANK3 haploinsufficiency in neurological deterioration, in addition to its involvement in the neurobehavioral phenotype of PMS.
The aim of this paper is to study the feasibility of fault detection and diagnosis in a three-phase inverter feeding an induction motor. The proposed approach is a sensor-based technique using the mains current measurement. A localization domain made with seven patterns is built with the stator Concordia mean current vector. One is dedicated to the healthy domain and the last six are to each inverter switch. A probabilistic approach for the definition of the boundaries increases the robustness of the method against the uncertainties due to measurements and to the PWM. In high-power equipment where it is crucial to detect and diagnose the inverter faulty switch, a simple algorithm compares the patterns and generates a Boolean indicating the faulty device. In low-power applications (less than 1 kW) where only fault detection is required, a radial basis function (RBF) evolving architecture neural network is used to build the healthy operation area. Simulated experimental results on 0.3- and 1.5-kW induction motor drives show the feasibility of the proposed approach.
Electrostatic properties of the point-plane electrode configuration are reviewed in the hyperbolic approximation. Simple expressions for the field in the neighbourhood of the tip are derived under the assumption that space-charge distortion is absent. Current induced by a charge carrier moving along a field line is investigated and the theoretical expressions are compared with experimental results. Finally, the problem of the space charge is solved along the tip axis.
<para xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"> This paper describes active fault-tolerant control systems for a high-performance induction-motor drive that propels an electrical vehicle (EV) or a hybrid one (HEV). The proposed systems adaptively reorganize themselves in the event of sensor loss or sensor recovery to sustain the best control performance, given the complement of remaining sensors. Moreover, the developed systems take into account the controller-transition smoothness, in terms of speed and torque transients. The two proposed fault-tolerant control strategies have been simulated on a 4-kW induction-motor drive, and speed and torque responses have been carried to evaluate the consistency and the performance of the proposed approaches. Simulation results, in terms of speed and torque responses, show the global effectiveness of the proposed approaches, particularly the one based on modern and intelligent control techniques in terms of speed and torque smoothness. </para>
Fuel cells are electrochemical devices that convert the chemical energy of a gaseous fuel directly into electricity. They are widely regarded as potential future stationary and mobile power sources. The response of a fuel-cell system depends on the air and hydrogen feed, flow and pressure regulation, and heat and water management. In this paper, the study is concentrated on the air subsystem that feeds the fuel-cell cathode with oxygen. Proceeding from a fourth-order model representing the air subsystem of a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell, a reduced third-order model is presented. Simulations show that the relative error caused by this reduction does not exceed 5%. Experimental validation has been done on a 33-kW PEM fuel cell, for both fourth- and reduced third-order models with less than 5% relative error. Additionally, a higher order sliding-mode supertwisting algorithm, with a well-known heuristic modification using variable gains, has been designed and validated experimentally to control a permanent-magnet synchronous motor that drives a volumetric compressor (double screw) designed to feed the 33-kW fuel cell with air.
This paper describes a fault-tolerant control system for a high-performance induction motor drive that propels an electrical vehicle (EV) or hybrid electric vehicle (HEV). In the proposed control scheme, the developed system takes into account the controller transition smoothness in the event of sensor failure. Moreover, due to the EV or HEV requirements for sensorless operations, a practical sensorless control scheme is developed and used within the proposed fault-tolerant control system. This requires the presence of an adaptive flux observer. The speed estimator is based on the approximation of the magnetic characteristic slope of the induction motor to the mutual inductance value. Simulation results, in terms of speed and torque responses, show the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
Planar microwave sensors are considered an attractive choice to noninvasively probe the dielectric attributes of biological tissues due to their low cost, simple fabrication, miniature scale, and minimum risk to human health. This paper develops and measures a novel microwave biosensor for non-invasive real-time monitoring of glucose level. The design comprises a rectangular plexiglass channel integrated on a triple-pole complementary split ring resonator (TP-CSRR). The proposed sensor operates in the centimeter-wave range 1-6 GHz and is manufactured using PCB on top of an FR4 dielectric substrate. The sensor elements are excited via a coupled microstrip transmission-line etched on the bottom side of the substrate. The integrated CSRR-based sensor is used as a near-field probe to non-invasively monitor the glucose level changes in the blood mimicking solutions of clinically relevant concentrations to Type-2 normal diabetes (70-120 mg/dL), by recording the frequency response of the harmonic reflection and transmission resonances. This indicates the sensor's capability of detecting small variations in the dielectric properties of the blood samples that are responsive to the electromagnetic fields. The proposed sensor is verified through practical measurements of the fabricated design. Experimental results obtained using a Vector Network Analyzer (VNA) demonstrate a sensitivity performance of about 6.2 dB/(mg/ml) for the developed triple-pole sensor that significantly outperforms the conventional single-pole and other proposed sensors in the literature in terms of the resonance amplitude resolution.
In this paper, an innovative control strategy for hybrid power sources dedicated to automotive applications is detailed. First, an analysis of classical hybrid architectures using fuel cell (FC)/supercapacitors is presented. Then, an analysis of load requirements for automotive applications is proposed. A new control strategy of a single converter, based on a cascaded control loop with a decoupling strategy in the frequency domain, is fully explained. Finally, experimental results on a Ballard proton exchange membrane FC are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.
This paper presents a specific controller architecture devoted to obtain a permanent-magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drive that is robust to mechanical sensor failure. In order to increase the reliability which is a key issue in industrial and transportation applications (electric or hybrid ground vehicle or aerospace actuators), two virtual sensors (a two-stage extended Kalman filter and a back-electromotive-force adaptive observer) and a maximum-likelihood voting algorithm are combined with the actual sensor to build a fault-tolerant controller (FTC). The observers are evaluated through simulation and experimental results. The FTC feasibility is proved through simulations and experiments on a 1.1-kW PMSM drive.
The recent ability to integrate semiconductor-based optoelectronic functionalities within thin fibers is opening intriguing opportunities for flexible electronics and advanced textiles. The scalable integration of high-quality semiconducting devices within functional fibers however remains a challenge. It is difficult with current strategies to combine high light absorption, good microstructure and efficient electrical contact. The growth of semiconducting nanowires is a great tool to control crystal orientation and ensure a combination of light absorption and charge extraction for efficient photodetection. Thus far, however, leveraging the attributes of nanowires has remained seemingly incompatible with fiber materials, geometry, and processing approaches. Here, the integration of semiconducting nanowire-based devices at the tip and along the length of polymer fibers is demonstrated for the first time. The scalable thermal drawing process is combined with a simple sonochemical treatment to grow nanowires out of electrically addressed amorphous selenium domains. First principles density-functional theory calculations show that this approach enables to tailor the surface energy of crystal facets and favors nanowire growth along a preferred orientation, resulting in fiber-integrated devices of unprecedented performance. This novel platform is exploited to demonstrate an all-fiber-integrated fluorescence imaging system, highlighting novel opportunities in sensing, advanced optical probes, and smart textiles.
